New team for aspiring racers
FOGI Racing is a development motorcycle road racing team for riders 12-16 years old to compete in the USGPRU 2010 season.
The new team has been made possible by team manager and racer Angus Borland of RAT Racing, which has taken Canadian racer Adam Roberts to two (2008, 2009) USGPRU GP250 Championships and a Wild Card ride at the 2009 Red Bull Indianapolis MotoGP. RAT Racing also took Scot/Canadian Ben Young to third place overall in the GP125 Eastern USGPRU Championships in the 2009 season.
The team has two GP125’s for the season. The first is a Honda Luyton Kit RS125 as ridden by Young in 2009. It has full aftermarket suspension, brakes, motor and fairing. This machine would suit a more experienced rider. The other is a Honda RS125 B. This machine has only few modifications and would suit a rider who is climbing the ladder to podium finishes.
FOGI Racing offers the full team experience. The team staff are ex-racers who can pass on their valuable experience of setup and riding techniques, making the rider a better racer through education, not just better machinery. The rider arrives at the track and rides, so they can focus on their development and not wrench turning. All machine setup, work and maintenance are performed by the team’s mechanics.
Young has joined the FOGI Racing Development Team by moving up a class to contend in the GP250’s in 2010 on the team's Yamaha TZ250. The experience of the GP250 will continue in good stead for moving onto 600cc machines for 2011 season and beyond.
FOGI Racing is in discussion with a team who competes in Spain to arrange a European ride exchange program. The objective is to invite a rider from overseas to race in the US with the team in exchange that one of its riders race in their championship. This will add to the experience of each rider and give them the insight in what racing is like away from their home country.
Racers who would like the opportunity to be part of FOGI for the 2010 season can contact Scott Young at 1-519-378-6567 or email scott-d-young@hotmail.com for further details, season costs and information.

Aoyama gets close to Sepang record
Interrupted only by a downpour of rain on Tuesday afternoon, Hiroshi Aoyama and the Interwetten Honda MotoGP Team concluded their three-day test at the Sepang International Circuit last Wednesday having registered very positive results.
Timing his fastest lap at just two tenths of a second slower than the circuit record with a fastest turn of 2:02.30, and close to half a second faster than test companion Marco Simoncelli, Aoyama was delighted to have had the opportunity to enjoy more time aboard a premier class bike.
“It was very important that we had the test in Sepang at this time of the year,” said the 2009 250cc World Champion. “The circumstances were ideal; apart from the rain on Tuesday afternoon. I have to learn a lot, because the MotoGP bike is so much different from the 125cc and 250cc machines. I have to get used to the traction control and to the fact that all works electronically. I am satisfied with the work of these days, but I want to do more.”
He added: “Now I will travel back to Japan and spend some time with my family and friends, and when I come back to Barcelona in January I will spend more time analysing the data from this test in order to be prepared for the next test in February, when we come back to Sepang.”
Aoyama tested the 2009 Honda machine at this test, and for the next scheduled MotoGP test in February is set to have the 2010 prototype, Technical Director Tim Jojic confirmed.
Simoncelli, whose fastest time was a 2:03.20, undertook a 21-lap race simulation on the final day, and was pleased to have also been able to gain further valuable experience.
The San Carlo Honda Gresini rider said: “I’ve ridden around 900 kilometres (160 laps) over the past three days, which was a nice early Christmas present! I’m happy; I had hoped to go a little faster but the lap times were not our principal target here and I am extremely satisfied with what we have achieved.
"Fortunately today the rain held off and we were able to do a race simulation. I did 21 laps at a consistent pace in the 2:04 region – even over the last few laps when the tires were almost completely spent. Before the race simulation I did a 2:03.20 but I felt like I could have gone a good bit faster if the track was in better shape.”

Sommer-Simmons to ride in Cannonball Run
From Andrea Burnett Public Relations
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Three-time Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee and author of the newly published book, The American Motorcycle Girls: 1900 – 1950, Cristine Sommer-Simmons has announced that she will be riding in the Motorcycle Cannonball Run next year.
Sommer-Simmons will be one of only two women riders in the cross-country endurance run of the century. The Motorcycle Cannonball Run is gathering momentum to launch a pack of riders on vintage motorcycles for an historic ride across America in September, 2010.
The brainchild of Lonnie Isam, Jr., promoter and owner of Jurassic Racing in Sturgis, SD, the Motorcycle Cannonball Run of 2010 requires that participants ride classic pre-1916 motorcycles such Pope, Sears, Flying Merkel, Excelsior, Henderson, Indian, Triumph, and Harley-Davidson’s Silent Grey Fellows.
Sommer-Simmons will start the 3,320-mile transcontinental ride on Sept. 10 on the east coast in Kitty Hawk, NC on her 1915 Harley-Davidson.
“This is the thrill of a lifetime,” she said. “It’s an honour to be a part of such a historic and monumental race, and even more exciting to be the only American woman registered for the event.”

Honda series continues to grow
TORONTO, ON -- Honda Canada and series organizers Professional Motorsports Productions have confirmed most of the details concerning the 2010 Honda CBR125R Challenge series, one of the National classes in the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship.
The Honda CBR125R Challenge was founded in 2007, with the goal of providing racers with a cost effective, production-oriented class for rider development.
In 2010, the Honda CBR125R Challenge will comprise 10 events, staring with two rounds at the new ICAR venue in Mirabel, north of Montreal, on May 28-30. The second weekend of racing will encompass three races on two tracks at Race City in Calgary, June 25-27. Another triple header will take place at Mosport, again on the big track and the kart layout, July 9-11. The 2010 Honda CBR125R Challenge series finale is slated for Atlantic Motorsport Park in Nova Scotia, outside Halifax, with a doubleheader on Aug. 6-8.
Series organizers plan a CBR125R exclusive Official Track Day at the start of the 2010 season, sometime in May, at an Ontario venue. Activities will be open to riders 13 years of age or older, the same requirements applied to the National tour.
Last season, CBR125R Challenge competitors took part in a demonstration event during July’s Honda Toronto Indy. A similar arrangement is under discussion for the 2010 Honda Toronto Indy open-wheeled auto race weekend on the lakeshore.
The Calgary and Mosport events will also serve as rounds for the Honda CBR125R contingent in the Canadian National Mini RoadRacing Series, organized by famed rider development experts, the Alberta Mini RoadRacing Association. There are six rounds in the AMRA National series for 2010: Martinsville, SK, May 22-23; Lumsden, SK, June 12-13; Calgary, June 24-27; Mosport, July 8-11; Chilliwack, BC, July 31-Aug. 2; and Quesnel, BC Aug. 6-8.
The Honda CBR125R Challenge series will continue largely unchanged in 2010, with an emphasis on unmodified, identical, spec class single cylinder street-based machinery. A detailed description of changes for the 2010 season, as well as further updates through the winter, can be found at www.cdnsuperbike.com.

Kuhn does LeoVince deal
HAMILTON, ON -- Parts Canada Superbike racer, Toolee Motorsports' Lee Kuhn Jr. has finalized a 2010 partnership deal with exhaust manufacturer LeoVince. Kuhn’s new Triumph Daytona 675s will be equipped with full LeoVince SBK Factory Titanium systems.
“It was super exciting to hear we had the world’s largest powersport exhaust manufacturer on board,” said Kuhn. “My crew chief [dad, Lee Kuhn Sr.] decided the LeoVince system was the way to go because of its superior low and midrange horsepower. The tracks we race on in Canada tend to be tight and technical, where the benefits of their system will really shine through.”
Acceleration Racing is supplying Hotbodies bodywork and PK Power quick shifters for Kuhn’s Triumphs. Acceleration owner, Parts Canada Superbike racer Clint McBain will also be offering mentorship to Kuhn.
“I can’t put into words how cool it is to have one of my racing heros helping me with my own program,” said Kuhn. “Clint is an amazing racer and I know he has a wealth of knowledge he can share with me.”
Though Pirelli tires are the spec tire in the National Parts Canada Superbike Series, Kuhn will also be running them while racing the SOAR Regional Series at Toronto Motorsports Park with sponsorship from Orion Motorsports/Pirelli.
Kuhn will also add Tech Spec as a partner for 2010, with his Triumphs fitted with its state of the art tank grip. Binbrook Auto Service will handle the maintenance of the race rig and Nightline Customs will look after all the bodywork and paint on the Hotbodies bodywork.
Continuing their support in 2010 will be Sturgess Cycle/Triumph, celebrating its 100th anniversary, Monster Energy, Arai Helmets, Inside Motorcycles Magazine, Great Northern Battery, Carson Signs and Spyke.

Alex de Angelis will change class next season and race in Moto2 for Team Scot, in the debut season of the four-stroke 600cc category.
The San Marinese rider confirmed to motogp.com on Monday that he had put pen to paper on a one-year deal, and said: “Next year I will race with Scot Moto2 in a team structure that is practically all San Marinese.
“The headquarters of Cirano (Mularoni, team manager) is no more than 500 metres from my home and I worked with the chief mechanic (Pietro Caprara) in my last two seasons in 250cc. As a team base, it is very encouraging.”
De Angelis also explained the objective of his one-year deal, adding: “The contract is only for one year because the aim is to return to MotoGP as soon as possible.”
Mularoni stated: “We’ve been thinking of Alex de Angelis as a potential rider for our team for a long time. We will start in Moto2, an innovative class, having secured a World title (in the 250cc class with Hiroshi Aoyama) and our team aspires to have the strongest rider line-up.”

Duhamels coming to Canadian Motorsports Expo
From Inside Track Communications
TORONTO, ON - There is no question that Canada’s first family of motorcycle racing is the Duhamel clan, and two of its legendary members will make an appearance at the Canadian Motorsports Expo Jan. 22-24, 2010.
Yvon Duhamel, the patriarch of the family, and his son Miguel, will be at the International Centre in Mississauga, ON to meet racing fans, sign autographs and talk about their storied careers.
A native of Montreal, Yvon Duhamel made his name as a versatile racer who tackled virtually every form of the sport, from motocross and ice racing to flat track and road race. He earned international acclaim, however, for his road racing exploits. Riding for the Deeley Yamaha team, Duhamel finished second in the Daytona 200 in 1968 and qualified on pole for the 1969 Daytona 200 with the first ever qualifying lap above 150 mph.
In 1971 Yvon joined the Kawasaki factory racing team and became famous for his ability to tame the daunting H2R three-cylinder two-stroke. He won five American Motorcyclist Association Nationals for Kawasaki between 1971 and ’73 and represented the company on the international stage.
Miguel Duhamel is one of the most successful racers in AMA history. He has won the Daytona 200 on five occasions, claimed five AMA Supersport titles, two AMA Formula Xtreme crowns and was AMA Superbike champion in 1995.
He was the AMA Superbike Rookie of the Year in 1990, riding for the Yoshimura Suzuki team. He raced for Honda in 1991 and competed in Grand Prix racing in 1992 on a Yamaha. After a year with Kawasaki in the U.S. in ’93, he helped Harley-Davidson’s fledgling Superbike team in 1994 before joining the American Honda factory squad in 1995 for a relationship that would last 14 years.
Miguel is the winningest rider in AMA road racing history with 86 victories in Superbike, Supersport and Formula Xtreme competition.
“Having Yvon and Miguel Duhamel join us at the Canadian Motorsports Expo brings a whole new element to this event,” said CME show founder and president Glenn Butt. “They are without a doubt two of this country’s most successful racing exports and have represented Canada with great distinction internationally.”
The Canadian Motorsports Expo is a three-day celebration of Canadian racing that runs Jan. 22-24 at the International Centre (6900 Airport Road in Mississauga). The show is powered by Inside Track Motorsport News and supported by companies like Lucas Oil Canada, NASCAR Canada, Mosport International Raceway and Canadian Tire. In addition to booths and racing vehicles representing the entire spectrum of Canadian motorsports, the show is loaded with seminars and forums to entertain and inform racers and fans alike. Star drivers Matt Kenseth, Paul Tracy, Ron Fellows and Jessica Zemken will be at the CME to sign autographs and meet the fans.

Pirelli prepares for fifth year in Canadian Superbike
From Pirelli Tire North America
ROME, GA - As Pirelli Tire prepares for its fifth season as spec tire supplier to the Canadian Superbike Championship (CSBK), the national series is gearing-up for its 30th year racing the circuits of Canada.
“The national series has a proud history,” said Colin Fraser of Professional Motorsports Productions – organizer of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship. “We are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Superbike nationals and are looking forward to another exciting season.”
Pirelli will present two new products to CSBK teams for the 2010 racing season.
“We are introducing a new SC1 front tire and the SC3 rear,” said Chris Jensen, Pirelli’s Motorcycle Racing Manager. “Both the SC1 and SC3 feature new compounds that are more temperature resistant in their respective ranges. However, the big news is the new rear slick for the Superbike class. It is a 190/60R17 tire and adds the benefits of a 16.5” design without the extra cost of purchasing special rims.
“Pirelli is constantly improving the products supplied to all CSBK participants. We are excited to be starting our fifth year as spec tire to the series, and our commitment to motorcycle racing in North America remains strong, and we are proud to be associated with Orion Motorsports - who are providing great service to all the teams in the series.”
Round one of the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship takes place May 28-30 at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, QC and the season wraps up Aug. 5-8 at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, NS - a 2.56km (1.6-mile) track near Halifax that has also hosted 25 Canadian nationals.
The 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship will include classes for Parts Canada Pro Superbike, Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike, Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike, the Honda CBR125R Challenge and a new Sports Twins Pro/Am division.
The Sports Twins class will replace the long-running Suzuki SV650 National Cup and will be open to liquid-cooled twins producing no more than 75 horsepower and air-cooled twins of up to 95 horsepower.
The Parts Canada Superbike Championship enjoys the ongoing support of Parts Canada, Pirelli, Canadian Kawasaki Motors, Honda Canada, BMW Motorrad Canada and Deeley Racing.
Calgary-based Parts Canada is entering its 11th year as title sponsor of the Superbike Nationals.
Eslick rides Suzuki at Road Atlanta
Danny Eslick had his first ride on the GEICO Powersports RMR Suzuki this
past weekend at Road Atlanta. Very cold temperatures prevented any real
fast laps; however the team was able to get all of its 2010 promotional
photos taken care of.
"We would like to thank the guys from NESBA for allowing us to run with
their club," said team owner Richie Morris.
"Obviously the weather didn't go in our favour but at least it wasn't
raining," said crew chief Barry McMahan. "It was a little too cold to
actually get any productive testing as far as set-up goes. But at least
we were able to get Danny on the bike and get photographs taken.
The people from NESBA were real nice and made us feel right at home, so
we want to thank them."

Track president George Bruggenthies is pleased with the expanded event.
"The world of vintage motorcycling is a vibrant, diverse family that includes, collectors, restorers and enthusiasts who just love to ride old bikes, as well as racers. Road America is a great place to celebrate that spirit," he stated.

Relieved James in Toronto
TORONTO, ON -- A somewhat relieved Darren James was at the Toronto Motorcycle Show on Friday, having managed to preserve his national road racing program after it appeared to be dead.
When Harley-Davidson initially terminated Buell production in October it looked like James' Ruthless Racing team, which has run the 1125R in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship for the past two years, was finished. But the recent announcement of the rebirth of the brand as Erik Buell Racing has given the Vancouver-based team a new lease on life.
James has three of last year's 1125Rs in his possession and will compete in the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike class, and perhaps the Parts Canada Superbike feature class in 2010.
Additionally, the team will also run Olivier Spilborghs in the new Sports Twin class, which was announced earlier in the week by national series organizer Professional Motorsports Productions.
Crew members Thomas Morin and Dave Murphy have been retained by James for the 2010 season.
Additionally, Ruthless Racing plans to provide contingency for the Superbike, Pro Sport Bike and Sports Twin classes in the national series, as well as the Western Canadian Championship.
In other news from the Toronto show, national Honda CBR125R Challenge champion Steven Nickerson appeared with a cast on his left arm, the result of a fall while ice skating! The arm is broken in two places. The Hamilton, ON teen is hoping to move up to the Amateur Sport Bike ranks next summer.
Another former CBR Challenge frontrunner, Lee Kuhn Jr., will race Triumphs in 2010 and is reportedly due to shortly announce a sponsorship deal with Leo Vince as well as Pirelli for action in the SOAR regional series, which runs at Toronto Motorsport Park, near his home in Hamilton.
Superbike racers Jordan Szoke, Alex Welsh, Kevin Lacombe and Steve Crevier were also in attendance on Friday. Neither Szoke nor Welsh have their deals finalized with Canadian Kawasaki Motors, although Welsh apparently has another year remaining on his contract.
Yamaha's withdrawal from the Canadian series has left Lacombe looking for work, while Crevier is a victim of the restructuring of Buell.

1000cc for MotoGP in 2012
FIM President Vito Ippolito and Dorna Sports CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta confirmed engine capacity changes for the MotoGP World Championship on Friday, which will come into effect for the 2012 season.
Following talks between MotoGP’s governing body the FIM, series rights holder Dorna Sports and the MSMA, the Commission agreed to change the maximum engine capacity of the MotoGP class to 1000cc for the 2012 season. A limit of four cylinders will also be introduced, with a maximum cylinder bore measurement of 81mm.
Mr. Ippolito said, “This base will give all the manufacturers the opportunity to start work. At the beginning of next year we will produce the new rules in a more complete format, but that is the basis; 2012 will be the year of a new era of MotoGP.”
Mr. Ezpeleta stated, “It was a very important meeting to decide the future of the MotoGP class. From 2012 the bikes will have an engine capacity of up to 1000cc, have up to four cylinders and the maximum bore will be 81mm. It’s a very important measurement because with this we can have all the characteristics of the engine. This has been approved and between now and the start of the 2010 season we will have another two meetings to define the rest of the specifications for this new class.”
Several minor technical rules change were also announced for 2010, alongside further regulations related to the new Moto2 class.

Halmanza and Giroux for Husqvarna team
TORONTO, ON - On the heels of the announcement that Husqvarna Corporation has chosen Barrett Marketing Group (BMG) as the new Canadian distributor of its motorcycle products, Husqvarna Canada has announced an exciting new off-road race team for 2010.
Canadian off-road icons Marty Halmazna from Alberta and Guy Giroux from Quebec will compete at select events in 2010 including the Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) rounds and various regional events across Canada. Halmazna also has his sights set on some of the world's most extreme races including a return to the notorious Erzberg Hare Scramble in Austria.
“It has been an exciting and satisfying process to put this race effort together,” explained Husqvarna Canada’s Josh Barrett.
He indicated that he has been working closely with Feeding Performance Inc.’s race team director, Marc Coffin to select the best combination of racers for their program.
“We really wanted a solid combination of proven racers,” indicated Coffin. “Halmazna and Giroux were easy choices when it came to picking seasoned racers. They both have had amazing careers
and are still keen on continuing to add to their trophy collections and causing grief for their competition.”
In addition to numerous regional titles and an ISDE medal, Halmazna has accumulated four Canadian National Cross Country Championships and has earned the respect of fans and fellow racers in Canada and around the world with his outstanding performances in international events, including finishing the nearly impossible Erzberg Hare Scramble on his first two attempts and solid results at Last Man Standing in Texas and Hell’s Gate in Italy.
Giroux has an impressive list of accomplishments including 17 Quebec Off-Road Championships, second in the E2 Class and fourth overall in the 2009 CEC series, and third at the Endurocross race that was held during this year’s Montreal Supercross.
He also has a ridiculous laundry list of results including an ISDE Gold Medal, three top 10 overalls in the Canadian Motocross Nationals, over a dozen main event appearances at the Montreal Supercross and is one of only a handful of Canadians to finish the legendary Paris to Dakar Rally.
The team will operate under the direction of Feeding Performance Inc. and in addition to having direct factory support from Husqvarna; the team will have some serious assistance as a result of securing backing from Ty Davis and his Zip-Ty Racing program.
“I called Cory Graffunder, who has earned a Factory ride with Zip-Ty Racing Husqvarna in the USA, to get the scoop on some Canadian riders that I was considering for our program,” said Coffin. “That led to discussions with Ty Davis about what I was trying to accomplish in Canada. Ty was very receptive and has agreed to not only provide us with technical and parts support, but has also opened the door for our riders to train with his crew in California.
"My whole goal is to provide better support for Canadian racers and to raise the bar in our sport. I think this is a huge step forward. The off-road racing scene in Canada is really gaining momentum. It is an exciting time and I am looking forward to how things will develop in the coming years.”
In an addition to racing for the new FP Husqvarna / Zip-Ty Racing Canada team and working with Coffin to run its race program, Giroux is joining Husqvarna Canada as an employee. He will provide technical support to dealers across the country and will also have responsibility for Husqvarna Canada’s race program for dealer supported riders.

Biaggi fastest in final test day
Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing) scooped the fastest overall time during Valencia tests on Thursday, on a day when all the Superbike riders in attendance improved their lap times compared to day 1.
Biaggi's 1:33.8 was the only lap time under 1:34, and it was an ominous sign for his rivals, considering that he was consistently fast in race pace as well as quick for one lap when required.
Leon Haslam (Suzuki) took half a second off his first day time, setting a 1:34.0, heading three other British riders in the final times at this unofficial test.
Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha) had to stop in the final minutes when he was all set to improve on his 1:34.1, Jonathan Rea took his Honda to a time just 0.1 seconds behind, while James Toseland (Yamaha) got back into the WSB groove with a 1:34.3 best and a rash of laps in the 1'34s.
New Honda man Max Neukirchner did a 1:34.7, and the rider who replaced him at Suzuki, Sylvain Guintoli, put in a 1:35.0.
Two crashes held back the lap time of Leon Camier, but despite working more on set-up than on pace, he did a 1:35.2, as he makes the transition from BSB and Yamaha to WSB and Aprilia.
Most teams will now wait until the official tests at Portimao at the end of January to test again.
In Supersport, Hannspree Ten Kate Honda men Kenan Sofuoglu and Michele Pirro were the only two riders out, with Sofuoglu doing a 1:36.1 and Pirro improving to a 1:36.4.
R1 ineligible for Canadian Superbike
TORONTO, ON -- Among the agenda items for Wednesday’s meeting of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship Road Race Management Group was an explanation regarding the status of Yamaha models in the 2010 National Championship.
In November, Yamaha Canada announced that it was withdrawing from the National tour, both in terms of series support and rider/team involvement. Previously, the six major manufacturers directly involved in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship contributed equally to the series structure, including support of the television broadcast package.
At the meeting, the following items were specified for the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship:
1. No 2010, new model OE Yamahas will be allowed to participate in any of the series classes;
2. The 1000cc Yamaha YZF-R1 model, in all years of production, will not be allowed to compete in the Pro Superbike class. No such restrictions will apply to existing 600cc YZF-R6 models.
“Our biggest concern is the privateer or club level racer with existing Yamaha equipment,” confirmed Colin Fraser of the series organizer, Professional Motorsports Productions. “The vast majority of Yamaha riders utilize 600s, and we agreed that it was in everyone’s best interests to allow these existing machines to continue to compete.”
Organizers added that they plan, and look forward to, reinstating Yamaha in the Feature category when the manufacturer is able to return to participate in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship Series.
Teenage sensation Jodi Christie earned the 2008 Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike National Championship aboard a Yamaha YZF-R6. Linnley Clarke and Pascal Picotte took Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike crowns aboard Yamaha 600cc production bikes.
The next item on the winter agenda for the Parts Canada Superbike Championship is an outline of the rules for the just announced, brand new Twin Sports category. The class includes liquid cooled twins with a maximum of 75 horsepower on the official series Dynojet Dyno, and air-cooled machinery with a maximum of 95 horses.
More detailed information will be available shortly for the Sport Bike type rules governing this production-based National Championship.
Machinery expected to compete in the upcoming 2010 Pro/AM Twin Sports National Championship Class includes the Suzuki SV650, various Kawasaki 650 models including the Ninja twin, and air-cooled bikes from Harley-Davidson, BMW, Buell and Ducati.

Toseland and Crutchlow enjoy productive test
From Yamaha Racing
Sterilgarda Yamaha World Superbike riders Cal Crutchlow and James Toseland settled in for their second test with their new 2010 team Wednesday at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.
The British pairing spent the day working through various electronic settings on the bike, including the anti wheelie control and the traction control to find a smoother feeling on the throttle of the championship winning R1.
“It’s nice being on a track I know so I could really concentrate on the bike, unlike Portimao in the last test where I was learning the circuit as well," said Toseland, whose best lap was a 1:34.8. "I think we’ve been really competitive today, the times I’ve been doing have been really comfortable, so a sign for me that the bike and team is working well.
"We’ve been mainly working on the electronic side of things today. It’s such a new bike, there were a lot of things the team wanted to try out during the 2009 season but didn’t have time to do, so the team are taking the opportunity to try some new things with a new rider to see if there’s an improvement.”
Crutchlow also spent some time working with the team to perfect his positioning on the R1, a larger bike than his championship-winning R6.
“We worked through some stuff today, mostly positioning on the bike," said Crutchlow, who turned a 1:35.0. "It felt a bit different from Portugal so it’s been harder to get comfy today.
"I didn’t use any good tires in today’s sessions so I think I got some decent times which I’m pleased with, the times were consistent 35’s over the day. We’ve got some more stuff to try tomorrow and we’ll keep working hard methodically through everything.”
Ruthless Racing rides again
CONCORD, ON - Since the announced discontinuation of Buell production by Harley-Davidson Motor Company in October, speculation and rumour has formed around Canadian racing activity.
At this stage, Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada is proud to announce that it will stay true to its roots in racing and has committed to be on board for the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship, which incidentally marks the series’ 30th anniversary.
The categories supported will be the Pro Superbike, Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike and the new
Sports Twins Pro/Am Classes as well as the Western Canadian Championships.
With a different set-up than the previous year, dictated by the tightening of budgets for many manufacturers, the 2010 series will consist of an opening round followed by three double-headers.
The Deeley Racing/Ruthless Racing Inc. team will consist of the experienced Darren James – team owner/rider – racing in the Pro Superbike and Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike categories on 2009 Buell 1125R bikes, with the possibility of Olivier Spilborghs joining in and racing in the Sports Twins Pro/Am Class.
New courses for Turn 2 school in 2010
From Turn 2 Sportbike School
CALABOGIE, ON - Turn 2 Sportbike School has been busy in the off-season, developing innovative course offerings to add to its already impressive program line-up. New for 2010 is the expansion of the Advanced Riding Course (ARC) programs, with the introduction of ARC 3 and Racer Preparation Course (RPC). Turn 2's Controlled Riding Group (CRG) program has also undergone some changes.
ARC 3 is tailored to experienced track riders, and focuses on both physical and mental dimensions of the sport. The course is based heavily on advanced racing techniques. RPC is the first program of its kind in Canada. Designed for aspiring new racers, it is instructed only by top professional racers. With its open course curriculum and focus on track time - not class time - the CRG program provides a forum for riders to practice skills learned in the parallel ARC program.
Turn 2 introduces its Moto Club Membership, a premier program with a multitude of rewards and discounts. At the Turn 2 Moto Club GP Labour Day weekend race season finale, one lucky Turn 2 Moto Club member will win the Grand Prize of a 2010 Kawasaki Ninja 250R with a Nexo Sports Full Road Race Gear Package. The Turn 2 Moto Club Super Lap TT Series consists of 22 events taking place at Calabogie Motorsports Park for the 2010 season. To be eligible for the Grand Prize Draw, riders do not necessarily have to win races. Points for ballots are issued for meeting participation-based criteria, such as enrollment in courses and CRG days, most consistent rider and most improved rider. Only Turn 2 Moto Club Members are eligible for the Grand Prize Draw.
Turn 2 Sportbike School has also announced its soon to be launched, Zoomius-powered e-commerce website. Members have the ability to create their own rider profiles and check their times online. Nationals double the fun in 2010
From Professional Motorsports Productions
TORONTO, ON – The Parts Canada Superbike Championship will host a trio of doubleheader weekends as it celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2010.
Race City Motorsport Park in Calgary, Bowmanville, ON’s Mosport International Raceway and Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, NS will each stage a pair of feature races next summer. A single-round season opener at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, QC on May 28-30 fills out the seven-race schedule.
“We have had a great deal of success with doubleheader events in the past, particularly at Mosport,” said Colin Fraser of Professional Motorsports Productions, which organizes the Parts Canada Superbike Championship. “This format provides excellent value to our fans and competitors, which is an important consideration in these challenging economic times.”
Circuit ICAR made its debut on the national schedule last June with a very successful event on its 2.8km (1.74-mile) 14-turn circuit, as the Superbike tour made a welcome return to the province of Quebec.
Rounds two and three of the series will be held on the 3.2km (2.0-mile) Race City track, a mainstay of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship. The venue has staged 28 national rounds since 1987 and most recently hosted a doubleheader in 2007.
From Calgary the tour returns east to the fabled 3.9km (2.459-mile) Mosport International Raceway for rounds four and five July 8-11. The track has run a doubleheader since 2003 and last year staged its 25th Canadian Superbike National. The circuit will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2010.
The 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship wraps up with rounds six and seven at Atlantic Motorsport Park, a 2.56km (1.6-mile) track near Halifax that has also hosted 25 Canadian nationals.
Ending the season with a doubleheader should ensure a dramatic finish to the 2010 title chase, which has been all but clinched heading into the final round in recent years. AMP last hosted a twin bill in 2005.
The 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship will include classes for Parts Canada Pro Superbike, Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike, Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike, the Honda CBR125R Challenge and a new Sports Twins Pro/Am division.
The Sports Twins class will replace the long-running Suzuki SV650 National Cup and will be similar to the now defunct Thunder class in Canada and Moto-ST endurance program in the U.S. It will be open to liquid-cooled twins producing no more than 75 horsepower and air-cooled twins of up to 90 horsepower, with horsepower enforced on the official series Dynojet Dynamometer.
The Pro Honda Oils Women’s Cup is tentatively scheduled to share the bill with the regular national classes at ICAR and Mosport.
The Parts Canada Superbike Championship will not visit Calabogie Motorsports Park in Calabogie, ON in 2010 but hopes to be back in 2011, when the economic situation and track upgrade activities permit. The venue was a popular addition to the national tour in 2008 and 2009.
“We are facing tough economic times and that has thrown up some challenges this off-season,” Fraser said. “But the national series has a proud history and it was important for us to present as strong a series as we could. We are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Superbike nationals and we are looking forward to another exciting season.”
Such a lengthy title sponsorship arrangement is almost unheard of in Canadian motorsport.
Pirelli is entering its fifth year as spec tire supplier to the national series.
Television coverage of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship is again planned for TSN HD and TSN, with eight one-hour episodes, as in 2009.
2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship Schedule
Round 1, May 28-30, Circuit ICAR, Mirabel, QC
Round 2, June 24-27, Race City Motorsport Park, Calgary, AB
Round 3, June 24-27, Race City Motorsport Park, Calgary, AB
Round 4, July 8-11, Mosport International Raceway, Bowmanville, ON

JPR to back Taylor in 2010
From Don Taylor
PORT COLBORNE, ON -- Canadian dirt track champion Don Taylor has announced that he will be riding JPR-prepared Suzuki RMZ 450 flat trackers in the Singles division of AMA Pro Flat Track as well as the Canadian Motorcycle Association's National Championships in 2010.
Strong support for this initiative comes from Clare’s Cycle Suzuki, Taylor’s career long sponsor. Taylor captured the CMA 450 Expert National Championship in 2007 aboard a Clare’s Suzuki.
“I’m totally confident,” enthused the six-time Canadian champ. “I know JPR builds fast and reliable motors; I’m really pumped to be riding for them. John Parker’s Kawasaki was insane this year, just so fast. The JPR bike would pull away on the straight and I had to ride my you know what off to make it up in the corners. So I’m very pleased that my Suzukis will be built by JPR this year, like I say it gives me confidence. The other bonus is that Parker himself is so good at bike set up. Proper set up is such a big part of it and having that advantage is a big plus.”
Parker, who along with his long time partners Len Shpeley and Jake Van Roon comprises JPR, is a multi-time Canadian flat track champion whose bike building skills rival his on track expertise. JPR prepares a wide range of flat track motors including Rotax, Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki.
“We’re really, really happy about this,” Parker enthused from the JPR race shop in Stoney Creek, ON. “We’ve watch Donald grow up, he’s a graduate of my dirt track school and I’m really proud of him. He is the future of Canadian dirt track both on and off the track and we’re proud to partner with him. Donny’s going to get the best we can give him, there’s no holding back. My partner Len and I and Jake too, we’re going to give him the best of our knowledge.”
Parker finished second to Taylor in the 2009 Canadian dirt track series.
Taylor’s Suzuki RMZ 450 program is supported by Clare’s Cycle, JPR, Scorpion Helmets, Performance Under Gear, Nexo Sports, CP Pistons, Vortex Racing and Twenty Six Suspension.
Parker’s KXF 450 Kawasaki carries sponsorship from Kawasaki Canada, Inglis Cycle Center, JPR, Scorpion Helmets, 26 Suspension Hot Cams and Bickle Racing Extreme Measures.
AMA inducts Hall of Fame class
From the American Motorcyclist Association
LAS VEGAS, NV -- It was a night of heroes and legends at the 2009 American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony last Saturday, as nine of motorcycling's brightest lights were honoured by fellow riders for their contributions to the motorcycling lifestyle.
Celebrating in high style at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas, hundreds of riders from across the country converged to pay tribute not only to the class of 2009, but to all members of the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, based at AMA headquarters in Pickerington, OH. In all, more than three-dozen members of the AMA Hall of Fame, including the nine members of the 2009 class, were among more than 500 enthusiasts in attendance.
"Tonight begins a new era for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame," noted AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. "From this point forward, we will shine the light of achievement on each and every member of the AMA Hall of Fame, like we've never done before."
Moving the Induction Ceremony to Las Vegas this year is part of that, Dingman noted, as is a new tradition of bestowing special AMA Hall of Fame rings to inductees. "These rings are a fitting symbol of their accomplishments, and a visual tribute that will be recognized by everyone in the motorcycling community -- and beyond," he said.
Jack Penton, an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer who also serves as chairman of the board that raises money for the museum, noted that the new focus would extend to the AMA Hall of Fame Museum itself.
"While the Museum has hosted some incredible exhibits over the years, none of them has paid proper tribute to these incredible achievers -- and that's about to change," Penton noted. "Over the next year, we're redesigning the permanent display for the AMA Hall of Fame by moving it upstairs to the main exhibit hall in the Museum. In addition, each year we will have an exhibit area dedicated to our latest inductees, allowing us to truly spotlight our legends, which is only fitting as a tribute to their contributions to motorcycling."
The ceremony, hosted by motorcyclist and actor Perry King, honoured the AMA Hall of Fame class of 2009: industry innovator Robert Bates, off-road champion Randy Hawkins, motorsports giants Bob and Geoff Fox, suspension pioneer Gilles Vaillancourt, off-highway rights activist Mona Ehnes, longtime motorcycle safety proponent David Hough, legendary race team manager Gary Mathers and successful dirt-track racer and tuner Chuck Palmgren. Each took the stage to offer their thoughts.
A pioneer in modern motorcycle suspension development, in the 1970s the Canadian-born Vaillancourt developed off-road motorcycle shocks that featured a revolutionary multi-stage damping system. The shocks were a huge success, and his efforts grew into the legendary Works Performance powerhouse in the off-road world. The company also has expanded into other areas and builds suspension for airplane, photographic and military applications, among others.
"I've been very fortunate to have some good experiences in the sport and meet some very terrific guys who I count as friends these days," Vaillancourt said. "I'm really honoured that somebody would recognize what I've done in this industry. I got my start working in a motorcycle shop. In the winter, the shop effectively was shut down, so we spent a lot of time rebuilding the trade-ins, and that's how I got involved in working on motorcycles. After immigrating to the U.S. in 1960, I worked as a motorcycle mechanic and as a foreman on a printing press. Then, in the early 1970s, I got involved in modifying existing shock absorbers. That's how it all started -- it's been a long ride."
Trahan aims to finish Dakar dream
New Years are not always about parties and champagne. For Patrick Trahan, this January he will fly to Argentina where he intends to participate in the toughest motor race in the world, the Dakar rally.
The story started 25 year ago, when Trahan watched the Dakar on TV. Even if the Canadian did
not know much about this amazing race, it made an impression.
In 1998, after only 10 hours of motorcycle experience, he sent his KLR650 to Granada in order to participate in the Atlas Rallye in Morroco. He had several crashes a day, losing half the bike in the desert, getting towed by a camel to start the bike and winning the trophy for perseverance. He also became the first Canadian ever to participate in an African motorcycle Rally Race.
A year later, with the help of Honda Canada he became the first Canadian to participate in the Dakar on a bike. Not having a lot of experience, after only three days he had to retire.
“I was riding very fast and passing bikes all day but I did not see a big hole at 120km/h, and my rally was over," he remembers.
He returned in 2001 only to have his engine break halfway through the event.
After those two Dakar experiences Trahan became a professional motorcycle guide in the
desert and also managed some events for Honda Canada. He has raced in four other desert rallies: Dubai, Morroco, Rallye des Pharaons (Egypt) and most recently the Baja 1000.
“I am approaching this Dakar with a lot more experience and my only goal, like everybody else is to finish what I started 10 years ago," he exlains.
Trahan will compete as part of the Honda Europe Team, which will have available all the spare parts and mechanics to help Trahan finish his dream.

Buell back in business
The Buell motorcycle brand has been given a new lease on life.
In a late November video posted on You Tube Erik Buell, the founder of the iconic sport bike brand, announced the formation of Erik Buell Racing. The company will, "focus on the support of privateer racing efforts that will further enhance the racing heritage of the Buell brand," he said in the posting.
Buell got into the sport bike building business in the early 1980s with the formation of the Buell Motor Company. Harley-Davidson took over majority ownership of the brand in the early 1990s and acquired it outright in 2003.
But this past October Harley-Davidson announced it was ending production of Buell bikes in the face of significant financial losses for the parent company. That appeared to be the end of the Buell name before this latest ressurrection.
Ironically Buell enjoyed its most successful year on the track in 2009 with the Rotax-engined 1125R. Danny Eslick won the AMA's Daytona Sport Bike class while Canadian legend Steve Crevier finished fifth in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship as part of the three-rider Ruthless Racing squad.
"After the culmination of winning the AMA Daytona Sport Bike championship this season and the very successful debut of the 1125RR in American Superbike I am very happy to announce that Erik Buell Racing will continue to supply 1125R-based race bikes under licence from Harley-Davidson," Buell added on the You Tube video.
He also said the company will continue to provide parts, vehicle preparation and technical support.
This news could also provide a lifeline to Ruthless Racing, the Vancouver-based squad run by Darren James. Following Harley-Davidson's announcement in October James told Inside Motorcycles he was disbanding the team. But it is possible this news from Erik Buell may give him an opportunity to remain in the Parts Canada Superbike national tour.
H-D "supports the troops" in Toronto
CONCORD, ON -- Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada and the Canadian Forces Personnel and Family Support Services (CFPFSS), through its CANEX retail operations, have combined efforts, and as a result, a unique “Support Our Troops”-themed Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycle was created.
This iconic and unique custom-painted motorcycle embodies the passion, altruism, and pride of three organizations that have dedicated their efforts towards supporting the CFPFSS-administered Military Families Fund in its mission to assist Canadian Forces members and their families with special needs that they may have due to conditions of service.
Custom-painted by Extreme Measures and adorned with various important Support Our Troops symbols, the “Harley for Heroes”-themed Harley-Davidson Road King will be on display at the MMIC Toronto Motorcycle Show from Dec. 11-13 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
Sponsored by Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, the evening of Saturday, Dec. 12 will officially be presented as the Support Our Troops Night. Admission will be free after 5 pm for all military personnel members with proper credentials.
Visitors will be able to purchase tickets for the “Harley for Heroes” raffle at a price of $25 a ticket for a chance to win the “Support Our Troops”-themed Harley-Davidson Road King. On top of that, there is the chance to win a $500 Harley-Davidson gift card, redeemable at participating authorized Canadian Harley-Davidson Retail Stores. Starting Dec. 14, the purchase of raffle tickets will also be possible at CANEX outlets in Ontario and at select Harley-Davidson Retail Stores.
Made available through Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada, this unique and stunning motorcycle is a one-of-a-kind rolling icon in support of our troops. A cream, red, and black design, highlighted throughout by subtle maple leaves, serves as a backdrop for various important Support Our Troops symbols, such as the crest of the Canadian Forces on the front fender and a life-like red poppy image and the words “Lest we forget” on the rear. The saddlebags pay tribute to the Highway of Heroes and feature the Canadian Support Our Troops yellow ribbon image.
The bike was first unveiled at the Canadian National H.O.G. Rally in Calgary on Aug. 14.
“I was extremely proud to have the opportunity to show a little corporate citizenship and represent the generosity and the altruism of our Harley Owners Group members throughout the country by supporting such an important cause,” commented Don James, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada.
In addition to the donation of this unique commemorative motorcycle to the Military Families Fund, Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada further supports the troops by offering a $500 Canadian Parts & Accessories/GM credit to any regular or reserve Canadian Forces members with the purchase of a new, previously untitled motorcycle. Deeley is also giving those members of the armed forces who ride an opportunity to ride longer under warranty when they return home. The extended warranty will cover the number of days they were deployed to account for the balance of the remaining warranty period.
“CANEX has a long and proud association with Deeley Harley Davidson Canada, but the donation of this bike marks a new milestone accomplishment in support of our troops. This beautiful motorcycle will help do much good within the military community through the Military Families Fund,” said Gerry Mahon, President of CANEX.

AMA pays tribute to Hurt
From the American Motorcyclist Association
PICKERINGTON, OH -- The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) offers its most sincere condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of Hugh H. "Harry" Hurt, who died of a heart attack on Nov. 29. He was 81.
Professor Hurt was an award-winning author best known in the motorcycling community for conducting a benchmark motorcycle safety research study in 1981 entitled "Volume I: Technical Report, Motorcycle Accident Cause Factors and Identification of Countermeasures, January, 1981 - Final Report." Commonly referred to as the "Hurt Report," the study was widely viewed to be the most comprehensive motorcycle safety study of the 20th century.
In addition to that groundbreaking study, Hurt was the author of dozens of publications in the fields of motorcycle handling, safety, crash analysis, and helmet performance. It was on this basis that Hurt was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2007.
"Harry Hurt was an icon in the motorcycling community, and there's no doubt that his research prevented many motorcycle crashes and saved many lives," said Rob Dingman, AMA president and CEO. "On a personal level, he was such a good friend to so many people. He will be missed greatly, and yet his legacy will live on and inspire all of us to achieve excellence."
Hurt was a lifelong motorcyclist. Born in 1927, he grew up and began riding as a kid in west Texas. His first motorcycle was a worn-out Cushman scooter that he brought back to life. Hurt graduated from Texas A&M University in 1950, and became a Navy pilot during the Korean War. After the war, Hurt loaded up his 1947 Harley-Davidson 61 and headed west for California. He completed a master's degree in aeronautical engineering at the University of Southern California (USC), and soon after he joined the faculty at USC.
The 1970s motorcycle boom led to an increase in crashes, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a contract to study motorcycle accidents. The USC Traffic Safety Center got the job, and Hurt was the professor responsible for carrying out the study. The study's objectives were to determine the causes of motorcycle crashes, analyze the effectiveness of protective gear, such as safety helmets, and then determine what countermeasures might help prevent crashes or reduce injuries.
Hurt's investigative team, all of whom were experienced motorcyclists, went to motorcycle accident scenes, day or night, for over two years. The team collected exhaustive data on more than 900 motorcycle accidents, and interviewed 2,310 passing motorcyclists and studied 3,600 police reports from the same area. Numerous recommendations flowed from the study regarding protective apparel, riding practices and rider training.
Hurt summed up his advice about motorcycle safety in one sentence: "There is no magic bullet other than getting smart." That perspective led the motorcycling community to focus on the creation of research-based rider training and licensing standards, and making them available in every state. As a result, hundreds of thousands of riders have since benefited directly from Hurt's pioneering work.
"The most satisfying experience for any research scientist is to see public acceptance and wide application of their research results," said Hurt in a 2007 interview with the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame. "We were thrilled that the public and industry so widely accepted and used the 1981 report."
Hurt is survived by his wife Joan; sons Harry and John; three daughters, Julie, Vivien and Vera; and 10 grandchildren.
A remembrance will be held in January in Hurt's honour at the Head Protection Research Laboratory that he created in Paramount, CA.
Ontario to host international women's event
From the Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada
MARKHAM, ON -- The Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC) has announced that it will host an International Women Riders Congress and Festival (IWCF) at Deerhurst Resort in Huntsville, ON, Aug. 11-15, 2010. The MCC is extremely pleased that Honda Canada will be supporting this event as the Presenting Partner.
"In 2009, MCC and its Women Riders Council (WRC) collaborated with the American Motorcyclist Association at its International Women in Motorcycling Conference held in Colorado to highlight the cosmopolitan and growing participation and achievements of women motorcyclists", said Peter Jacobs, MCC President. "Canadian attendance more than doubled over the previous AMA Conference and there was a strong message to host a similar event in our own country."
"With a theme of 'One World, One Ride,' we're thrilled to celebrate the achievements of women riders from across Canada and around the world while offering opportunities to enhance rider safety and enjoyment through skills training and educational seminars," said Myra Abstreiter, Chair of the Women Riders Council. "The IWCF will focus on common ground, creating synergy and reinforcing women riders as leaders and role models. Our vision is to continue making a positive difference in our motorcycling community and beyond.
"It will be both educational and festive. The WRC's mandate is to provide resources and to promote and celebrate women riders. Now, we will do that on a larger scale. There will be networking opportunities, organized tours, a charity trail ride, skills challenges, demo rides and vendors - something for both novice and experienced riders from all disciplines of riding."
Although women still represent only approximately 13 per cent of motorcycle purchasers, they are the fastest growing market segment. Industry support has been immediate and solid.
In addition to Honda Canada, MCC is thrilled with partner commitments from BMW Motorrad, BRP, Harley-Davidson, Motorcycle Mojo and Inside Motorcycles magazine. As well, Ontario Tourism, the Town of Huntsville and the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Chamber of Commerce are welcoming the event and the IWCF has received endorsement from the Federation of European Motorcyclists' Associations (FEMA) and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) in the U.S.
MOTORESS partners with 'Look Good Feel Better'
From MOTORESS
TORONTO, ON -- MOTORESS has announced a new partnership with ‘Look Good Feel Better’, Canada’s only cancer charity dedicated to helping women manage the appearance-related effects of cancer and its treatment. As a charitable partner, MOTORESS intends to raise awareness for the cancer support program.
For the founder of MOTORESS, Vicki Gray, the partnership with ‘Look Good Feel Better’ is important and has a link with MOTORESS.
“It’s not easy to decide on just one charity, one cause for MOTORESS to partner with," stated Gray. “There are so many areas where women need assistance. Yet, the ‘Look Good Feel Better’ program helps women find support, gain confidence and take control of how they look, using cosmetics and hair alternatives, strengthening a positive attitude.
"I find this an essential component in treating cancer, as I’ve seen demonstrated by women I’ve known during my lifetime, who’ve battled cancer. There’s more to the fight than surgery or medical care, there’s the determination of spirit, and the belief in your own strength that enables women to face their illness with greater confidence."
Gray added that she has met many women with cancer who, after diagnosis and during treatment, have embraced motorcycling, giving them renewed courage and confidence.
MOTORESS is extremely proud to be partnered with an organization that has implemented programs in 18 major countries around the world such as Australia, France, Israel and Italy. ‘Look Good Feel Better’ Canada helps women in over 100 hospitals and cancer care facilities across the country.

Hatton counting down to Dakar return
DUNCAN, BC -- The bike is built and loaded on the ship in France heading for Argentina. Entrance fee is paid. The medical shots are all done. A thousand little details are being looked after by various people around the globe, all cumulating in Canadian Don Hatton starting in the 2010 Dakar Race on Jan. 1 in Buenos Aires. The race lasts 17 days and covers nearly 10,000 kilometers in Argentina and Chile.
“I’m nervous about the race but really excited about being back in the Dakar,” Hatton said.
This will be Hatton’s third attempt at the fabled endurance race. His first attempt was pre-empted by the cancellation of the race in 2008, when it was still held in North Africa, by the organizing body due to terrorist threats against the race participants. In the 2009 Dakar race held in Argentina Hatton crashed on day five and was severely injured.
He is fully recovered and recently finished fourth in the NPO Shamrock Rally de Maroc (Rally of Morocco).
Hatton’s new KTM 690 Rally bike was recently on display at his dealership, Duncan Motorsports, in Duncan, BC, where team mechanic Bernie Wright prepared it prior to shipping it to France. It will be loaded along with his replacement parts and personal racing equipment onto a ship by the ASO, the organizing body, so that all the competitors' bikes clear Argentina customs at one time. This will greatly simplify some of the logistical challenges faced by Hatton and his team last year.
Hatton is inviting his friends, fans and media to a gala send-off party to be held Dec. 23 at Duncan Motorsports.

Race City faces new battle
The fight for the future of Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park does not appear to be over, despite a City Council vote in favour of extending the track's lease in early October.
According to an S.E. Calgary News report last week, the City wants to increase the track's annual lease payments from $37,000 to $1,080,000. Race City owner Art Mackenzie told S.E. Calgary News that it would be virtually impossible for him to make such payments.
The increase is based on an adjusted value for the land the track sits on. The property was originally valued at around $6 million but according to the S.E. Calgary News report the City is now placing the value at $27 million, with annual lease payments calculated at four per cent of the land value.
The land value has reportedly been adjusted due to a change in zoning for the property.
Additionally, the revised lease was reportedly going to limit the facility to one entrance.
The issues with the lease negotiations have caught the attention of Alderman Ric McIver, one of the most strident supporters of Race City on Calgary's City Council, and as of an S.E. Calgary News story late last week it appeared the issue of the lease negotiations would be looked into.
“When you look at the greater public good, it is in everyone’s best interests to find a reasonable value for that land,” said Ald. McIver in the article.
The Parts Canada Superbike Championship is expected to shortly announce a doubleheader at Race City next June 24-27.

Ulrich sets two-up records
From Chris Ulrich Racing
AMA Pro American Superbike racer Chris Ulrich, working with significant support from track day provider Fastrack Riders, broke several records during the fifth annual Thanksgiving weekend fundraiser for the Roadracing World Action Fund Nov. 28-29 at Auto Club Speedway, in Fontana, CA.
For a minimum $50 donation to the Roadracing World Action Fund, a not-for-profit organization which advocates and promotes the use of soft barriers to help prevent rider injuries at racetracks, Ulrich took donors for fast, multi-lap rides on his 185-horsepower Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki GSX-R1000K8 racebike around the 2.3-mile, 21-turn infield road course. And by the end of the two-day fundraiser, Ulrich had set records for number of two-up rides given, 57; two-up laps completed, 180; and money raised, $3270.
Over the last five years Ulrich has raised a total of $9000 giving two-up rides. That's in addition to raising the awareness of motorcycle road racing by giving general interest media representatives rides at AMA Nationals, the two-seat Superbike's primary mission.
“We had a really good turn out,” said Ulrich. “We’ve been building this event over the years, and we promoted this one pretty well. In spite of some inclement weather and delays on Saturday we ended up taking 57 people for rides.
“It’s really good that even in these trying economic times people are willing to come out and donate their hard-earned money to help keep racers and track day riders safe. I just want the thank all of them for coming out and supporting the Roadracing World Action Fund and to thank all the people who made it possible -- everyone at Fastrack Riders, the staff at Roadracing World Publishing.”
In addition to his other records, Ulrich also set a new personal two-seater lap record. After mounting a new Dunlop rear tire on Sunday, Ulrich took 14-year-old USGPRU racer Ryan Matter around the track in just 1:34.606, undercutting his previous best, a 1:36.2 he did last year with racer Melissa Paris riding as a passenger. To put that in perspective, Ulrich’s best lap times during the AMA American Superbike National earlier this year at Auto Club Speedway were in the low-to-mid-1:26 range.
Fastrack Riders has partnered with Ulrich and the Roadracing World Action Fund to hold the Thanksgiving weekend fundraiser each year for the last five years, providing track time, riding gear and staff support.
Rossi second on Rally de Monza
Valentino Rossi finished second in the Rally de Monza, which he competed in this weekend.
Driving a Ford Focus WRC, the Italian rider was very fast throughout, taking four out of nine stage wins, but two errors on special stages 4 and 5 handed victory to Dindo Capello, driving a Citröen C4.
Rossi also took part in the Master’s Show, a competition involving all the participants of the rally in an elimination round special stage. Despite having the best overall time, Rossi reached the semi-finals where he lost to Capello, after beating Marco Simoncelli in the quarter final round.
“I finished the rally by winning the last super special 'Grand Prix' test in the rain and I am satisfied to have taken the fastest time as well in the Master’s, where I was hoping to take revenge on Capello but I was not able to do so," Rossi said.
"In recent years the level of the Rally de Monza has risen a lot and in order to win it is not enough just to be fast, it is also necessary to make few mistakes. In any case, the last 20 days have been very entertaining for me, firstly with the motocross in Cavellara, then with a Ferrari GT in Vallelunga and now with the rally.”
The sports activities of Rossi outside the world of two wheels will continue next weekend with the “Bettega Memorial”, a rally show which is celebrated each year as part of the Bologna Motorshow.
