Foggy toys with the opposition

From carlfogarty.com

Carl Fogarty was back on two wheels when he launched his new Kiddimoto Hero at the International Motorcycle Show at the NEC in Birmingham, England recently.

'Foggy' lined up on the grid onboard his new Kiddimoto Hero for a mock race with Troy Corser, James Toseland and Bradley Smith. The new Ducati-inspired Foggy Kiddimoto will be on display at the Kiddimoto stand for the duration of the 2009 Show and will be available to buy from www.kiddimoto.co.uk from Dec. 1.

“I think a Kiddimoto is a really cool toy and would definitely have been on my present list when I was that age," the former World Superbike champion said. "The Foggy bike is red, has a number one and some mean eyes, so I am sure that kids will love it.”

Simon Booth, Kiddimoto Managing Director, said: “To scoop three World Champions onto our stand for the launch was awesome. It shows just how respected the Kiddimoto brand has become, and how even top level racers view Kiddimoto as the ideal starting platform to teach the future generation of world champions their trade.”

Features of the Carl Fogarty Kiddimoto Hero include:
* Constructed from natural birch plywood (recyclable)
* Ideal platform for children to learn balance and steering
* Helps to improve motor skills
* No pedals or brakes
* Child safe paint

Birch wins 'Roof of Africa'

From KTM Racing

The 2009 edition of the Roof of Africa, known as the "Mother of all Hard Enduro events" was won by New Zealander Chris Birch onboard his KTM 300 after times were adjusted at the end of the three day event. Birch also won in 2008.

The 'Roof' has been run for 42 years and takes riders through terrain in the southern African country of Lesotho that demands immense physical effort and skills. This year riders also had to face extreme heat up to 42 degrees Celsius and some organizational difficulties.

The field had been dramatically trimmed by the end of a very tough second day. Some riders were so exhausted that they ended up staying overnight with local residents in the mountains but organisers were able to account for them all the following morning. It was then decided to shorten the course for the final day but this information did not reach all the teams and some of the course marshals.

Birch set out as leader on the final day and despite some confusion over the adjusted course and a missing marshal at a check point, headed for the notorious 'Bushman's Pass' in good conscience. He was then stopped by organizers who agreed to let him restart his race because of the confusion and the missing marshal.

Meanwhile Andreas Lettenbichler one of his biggest rivals, had hit the front and established a good lead also over Rory Mead and Curtis. Lettenbichler held onto the advantage for almost the entire last day, which proved much less demanding than the previous day, but then had to withdraw with technical problems just a few kilometres from the finish.

Jade Gudzeit was the first over the finish line just before Mead while Birch had practically achieved the impossible and made up almost two hours. Times were adjusted by the organizers and Birch was declared winner in front of Mead and Gutzeit.

Results
1. Chris Birch, New Zealand, KTM
2. Rory Mead, New Zealand, Yamaha
3. Jade Gutzeit, South Africa, BMW

Waters clinches Australian title

From Team Suzuki News Service

Team Joe Rocket Suzuki rider Josh Waters dominated both races at the final round of the 2009 Australian Superbike series at Phillip Island on Sunday to claim the Championship in his rookie season - and the team's sixth national Superbike crown.

Waters (22) held off the challenges of championship rivals Glenn Allerton and Wayne Maxwell to claim the number one plate in a thrilling winner-take-all finale to the seven-round series.

In a memorable day for the team, Waters' Team Joe Rocket Suzuki team mate Shawn Giles and Satellite rider Robbie Bugden shared in the celebrations with second and fourth respectively for the round, with Team Joe Rocket Suzuki rider Troy Herfoss claiming his first race victory on his Suzuki GSX-R600 in the Australian Supersport Championship.

Waters had entered the round two points adrift of defending champion Allerton and seven points clear of Maxwell, but withstood the pressure placed on him by his rivals to claim the title.

Waters took victory in the opening 10-lap race by 6.126 secs. over Allerton with Giles just 0.046 secs. adrift in third.

In the Championship-deciding final race, Waters again proved too strong, taking the win by 3.176 secs. from three-time Australian Superbike Champion Giles with Allerton third.

"I've never felt as nervous as I did today," said Waters. "The team has been fantastic and worked so hard to give me a bike that would do the job. I knew when I had my team mate sitting behind me as wingman in the last race that the title was mine."

Waters finished the 2009 season on 301 points, 10 clear of Allerton and 56 ahead of third-placed Maxwell.

Maxwell saw his chances of the title disappear on the opening lap of race one when he crashed heavily after hitting a patch of water as he exited Turn 11.

In the Australian Supersport Championship, Herfoss, the 2008 US Supermoto Champion, claimed his first race win in his rookie road-racing season, taking a thrilling victory in the opening 12-lap race by 0.080 secs. over Bryan Staring.

A fourth in race two saw 22-year-old Herfoss tie on points with 2008 champion Jamie Stauffer on the day, the latter being awarded the overall win on count-back by race officials.

Staring finished third overall for the round to claim the 2009 Australian Supersport Championship with Herfoss an impressive fifth on the championship points table in his debut season.

Barbera tests at rainy Jerez

From motogp.com

A fortnight after he rode the Ducati Desmosedici for the first time at the post-season Valencia test, Héctor Barberá was given the opportunity to take out the 800cc machine he will ride in his debut MotoGP season in 2010.

On the first of three scheduled days of testing for the Aspar rider at Jerez, Barberá came up against rain as he gained valuable experience of riding the Ducati prototype on a wet track.

Throughout Thursday morning Barberá continued his education aboard the bike, and despite the rain stopping at midday the track failed to dry sufficiently, so the team decided to work in the garage and avoid an unnecessary fall. Barberá completed 35 laps and recorded a fastest turn of 1:50.5 towards the end of his session.

“The first day has been very positive, because I have ridden on water and achieved a decent time,” said Barberá. “I adapted quickly to the track conditions and the modifications we have made.

“It was a pity we had to finish early because there are many things that still need to be tested. Anyway, I’m very satisfied with the feeling of the bike after the first day. To find a comfortable feeling when riding on water is complicated at the beginning, so it is more than enough reason to be happy. Here in Jerez I’ve realized the bike has plenty of power and incredible traction.

“Each time I get on the Ducati I feel it’s mine a little more and I enjoy driving it more, and I think that’s a good sign of progression. The day was short and we could not ride with slicks or wets, so it would have been stupid to continue and risk having a fall.”

The Aspar team plans to continue testing until Saturday, weather permitting, as the forecast for days two and three is rain.

Suzuki begins 2010 tests at Fontana

From Team Suzuki News Service

Team Rockstar Makita Suzuki's Tommy Hayden and Blake Young are fine-tuning their race bikes and gearing up to make Suzuki's championship-winning GSX-R1000 a winner again in 2010.

Hayden and Young were recently out on their new 2010 GSX-R1000s for two days of testing at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA before the beginning of the AMA Superbike season at Daytona International Speedway next March.

"So far, so good," Hayden commented. "Testing has been going well and things have been really smooth. We have a lot of stuff to work on, but so far it's been positive and feedback has been good. There are several small changes here and there that we've made to the bike and hopefully they'll add up to a big improvement once we get closer to the start of the season. There's a lot more horsepower on this bike; I can definitely feel the difference."

Young is poised to challenge Hayden for the title now that seven-time champion Mat Mladin has retired.

"This was our first test of the year and it went really well," he said. "Every year Suzuki seems to outdo themselves and make the GSX-R1000 better and better and so far that seems to be the case again this year. It's still early and we're testing a lot of things, but it's on track to being better than the 2009 bike. One noticeable change is a large increase in horsepower."

Peter Doyle, after working with Mladin on his championship run, is now Young's crew chief.

Blackfoot and Suzuki end relationship

By John Hopkins

Blackfoot Racing Inc. has announced it will not be partnering with Suzuki Canada in the 2010 Parts Canada Superbike Championship.

The Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing squad ran 18-year-old Brett McCormick in the 2009 championship, finishing second in both the Parts Canada Superbike and Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike classes. McCormick took four wins out of seven races in both categories.

According to a press release from the team, Blackfoot and Picotte Racing intend to maintain their working relationship and are exploring opportunities to compete with McCormick in the U.S.

"Blackfoot has enjoyed an amazing seven years racing in the Parts Canada Superbike Series," said Blackfoot's Pat Chambers in the release. "We want to thank Suzuki Canada Inc. and all of our sponsors for their support and trust over the years. I would like to offer a special thanks to Jason Mitchell (BRI), Nathan Naslund (Suzuki Canada), James Danyluk (Parts Canada) and Ronald Kabella (Motorex) for their continued commitment and friendship over the past seven years. I would also like to thank Pascal Picotte for basically running this team for the past three years and being the best partner in racing I could have hoped for.

"Pascal and I look forward to the next opportunity, we have a great relationship with what can only be considered one of the best young riders in North America and our hope is to move this incredible team forward with Brett McCormick as the premiere rider."

It is unclear what Suzuki Canada's future is in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship. Earlier this month there were rumblings that the company was going to withdraw from the national series, but that has yet to be confirmed. Should Suzuki remain in the series, a logical partner would be Clint McBain's Acceleration Racing, with McBain and his protégé, 2009 Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike champion Cody Matechuk riding.

Ironically, McBain came into the national series with Blackfoot and won the 2002 Pro Sport Bike title on a GSX-R600 before leaving the team after the 2006 campaign. The Cochrane, AB racer has competed on Suzuki equipment with his privateer Acceleration Racing squad since the 2007 season and finished runner-up to Jordan Szoke in the 2008 Superbike standings.

FOX supports Hall of Fame Ceremony

From the American Motorcyclist Association

PICKERINGTON, OH -- In support of motorcycling's history and racing's future, FOX Racing Shox is sponsoring both the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony -- as presenting sponsor of the 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Concours d'Elegance -- and the AMA Racing Championship Banquet, presented by KTM North America. The events take place on consecutive evenings, Dec. 4-5, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas.

The sponsorship will include a special display at both events showcasing the history of FOX Racing Shox.

"Since FOX Racing Shox founder Bob Fox, along with his brother Geoff of Fox Racing, are being inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame this year, we're very excited about the company's additional participation in the program," said AMA Special Events and Marketing Manager Tigra Tsujikawa. "Of course, FOX Racing Shox made its mark in motorcycle racing, and their sponsorship will nicely complement the championship awards banquet on Friday night."

FOX Racing Shox's founder and Chief Engineering Officer Bob Fox said that his company is proud to support this celebration of the accomplishments of motorcycling's innovators, leaders and stars.

"FOX Racing Shox totally supports the mission and goals of the AMA Hall of Fame, and our sponsorship flows naturally from that," Fox said. "FOX's own history began more than three decades ago with a passion for motocross and for innovation. Those passions continue to this day. For us, the celebration and commemoration of motorcycling's history and heritage -- and the individuals who created it -- enriches our sport and will inspire its future innovators, leaders, and stars. We are proud to be a sponsor of this event."

The racing banquet will recognize the champions from 2009 AMA Racing premier events and series. In addition, special awards, such as the AMA Racing Athlete of the Year, the AMA Racing Sportsman of the Year and the AMA Racing Female Rider of the Year, will be awarded.

At the Induction Ceremony the following evening, Perry King, legendary actor of stage, screen and TV, will serve as master of ceremonies as the AMA officially welcomes the 2009 class to the Hall of Fame. In addition to Bob Fox, this year's inductees are Fox Racing's Geoff Fox, industry innovator Robert Bates, off-road racer Randy Hawkins, suspension pioneer Gilles Vaillancourt, off-highway rights activist Mona Ehnes, longtime motorcycle safety proponent David Hough, noted race team manager Gary Mathers and successful dirt-track racer and tuner Chuck Palmgren.

On Saturday morning, the program will showcase some of the most beautiful motorcycles in existence at the Concours d'Elegance, presented by FOX Racing Shox. In addition, attendees will be able to meet the 2009 Hall of Fame inductees and other Hall of Famers at an autograph session held earlier in the day.

McRae fourth in Dominican finale

By John Hopkins

Team Envy Rides racer Joey McRae finished fourth in the final round of the 2009 Dominican International Superbike Championship and looks set to open the 2010 campaign in the Caribbean country.

The Orangeville, ON racer was invited to compete in the Dominican event by Team Dominguez, which loaned him a 2005 Suzuki GSX-R750 as there wasn't enough time to have McRae's Yamaha YZF-R6 shipped down.

Despite not having ridden a race bike in two months, his unfamiliarity with the Dominican track and temperatures in the high 80s, McRae was able to qualify the stock Gixxer ninth on the Superbike race grid.

"I’m just happy to have times so close to the Superbikes," said McRae, who finished seventh in the 2009 Armour Bodies Amateur National Sport Bike standings in Canada. "The heat and the stock suspension make it very difficult to go that fast.

“Not being used to this heat will for sure play into how fast I can go [in the race]. I have to last 10 laps so we’ll see what happens."

McRae got a good start in the race and was able to drop a second from his lap times in practice and qualifying.

“The race went well," he added. "The bike was very hard to ride, being stock and all, and down on power is not something you want against Superbikes, but I made the best of it. The heat sure played a part. By lap 6 it felt like someone was trying to cook me.”

After the event McRae was invited to open the 2010 season in the Dominican next March, where he will be joined by 2008 champion Franklyn Dominguez, who has raced in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship the past two years, and fellow national Amateur competitor Vanessa Gareau de Dominguez.

McRae was supported by Kevin Graham of Pirelli tires, Envy Rides, Team Dominguez, David Dominguez, 'Yoshy' his Dominican mechanic, Eddy, Eddy Jr. and Daniel.

HRC bosses race mini-bikes at Motegi

From Honda Racing Team

Riders in the final round of the NSF100 HRC Trophy mini-bike series were in for a surprise at the Motegi circuit on Monday when they found themselves racing wheel-to-wheel with HRC Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto, along with former Grand Prix riders Tady Okada and Shinichi Ito. Mr Nakamoto was part of an HRC team competing in a special four-hour endurance race at the circuit, which hosts the Japanese round of the MotoGP World Championship. An amazing 86 teams and 420 riders were taking part in the one-off race, all on Honda mini-bikes.

The HRC team was made up of Mr Nakamoto, HRC Directors Seiki Ishii and Tomoaki Nagayama, HRC test rider Okada - who usually spends his track time testing and developing Honda’s RC212V MotoGP challenger - and Honda racing veteran Ito. While the former Honda Grand Prix riders were inevitably keen to find the limits of the Repsol Honda branded NSF100, the HRC bosses were happy to simply experience the 100cc machine on which many aspiring racers begin their careers. The HRC team completed 105 laps and came home in a steady but respectably 57th place out of 80 finishers.

Apart from the fun of the endurance race, the serious business of the day were the two eight-lap NSF100 sprint races. These were the final rounds of the NSF100 HRC Trophy Championship - a one-make mini-bike series organised by Honda to promote affordable grass-roots competition and give the widest range of young riders the chance to begin racing. In 2009 there were 102 races held across Japan, with each circuit hosting its own championship. The NSF100 Trophy is also held in European countries such as Belgium, Italy, Finland, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Indeed, at the race in Motegi the top young NSF100 competitors from the European championships were taking part. Thirteen-year-old Andrea Locatelli, winner of the Italian NSF100 Trophy extreme, came home in 17th place, while Bo Bendsneijder (also 13) winner of the Netherlands series was 20th. Jesper Hubner from Sweden and Patrick Pulkkinen from Finland (both 13) placed in 22nd and 25th places.

The NSF100 is HRC’s purpose-built production racing model with a four-stroke, air-cooled single cylinder engine.

Rossi impresses in Ferrari outing

From motogp.com

Over 10,000 spectators gathered to watch Valentino Rossi on four wheels, as the MotoGP World Champion teamed up with Andrea Ceccato and Alessio Salucci in a Ferrari 430 prepared by the Kessel Team to take third place in the GT3 class in the 19th edition of the 6 Hours of Vallelunga last weekend.

Fog forced the opening laps of the endurance race to be driven behind the safety car, but it was Rossi who started behind the wheel and again took over in the sixth hour. However, there were problems for the Italian trio, as mechanical issues and an outbreak of fire in the closing stages prevented them from challenging for victory.

Rossi and his team-mates eventually finished behind the Corvette of Emanuele Pirro, Carlo Graziani and Elio Marchetti and the Ferrari 430 of Forgione, Carugati and La Mazza.

“We had a bit of misfortune at the end, so I’d like to come back and try again,” said Rossi. “If there is an opportunity to return next year, I’d be happy to, because when you are at the front only 40 minutes from the end it leaves a bit of a bitter taste.

“I was scared a little by the fire, but the safety guys were very quick to react. It’s tough, because we came close to victory. There wasn’t a battle at the start because of the safety car, but we’ve all had fun because we ran well and had many fans who came along.”

Pirro, who won the GT3 class, was quick to acknowledge Rossi’s efforts, and said, “Valentino is an example for everyone, because he’s a champion and has the humility to try different disciplines, without regret and giving his all.”

Bautista strong in Portuguese test

From Rizla Suzuki

Rizla Suzuki has concluded its final track action of 2009 with new signing Álvaro Bautista and factory test rider Nobuatsu Aoki completing a three-day test at the Estoril circuit in Portugal on Friday.

Bautista used the three days to continue his acquaintance with the Suzuki GSV-R and the performance of a MotoGP machine by completing over 200 laps of the 4.182km Portuguese track. His rhythm and speed increased step by step, eventually lapping consistently at 1:38.5, a time comparable to the Rizla Suzuki racers when they came to Portugal for the Grand Prix last month – despite cooler, lower grip conditions at the test.

Bautista was able to ride the GSV-R in a number of conditions over the three days with rain on day one, overcast skies on the second day and sunny, but cool conditions on the final day. He also tested some new specification engine components, aerodynamic parts and Akrapovic exhaust systems on day three and was able to confirm team-mate Loris Capirossi’s conclusions from the recent Valencian test.

Aoki continued with the fundamental test programme that regular racer Capirossi had begun during the test at Valencia, following the final race of the season earlier this month. He worked hard with Capirossi’s crew to continue the assessment of many new parts that will now be taken back to the Japanese factory for further re-evaluation during the winter test ban.

“Nobody in Suzuki or in the team is under any illusions regarding the amount of additional performance needed out of the GSV-R for 2010 and while the test items have not been night-and-day differences, they will certainly help the overall package be a lot stronger when we get the new bike at Sepang in February," said team manager Paul Denning.

“Álvaro has been very impressive over the three days and has completed 212 laps with absolutely no errors. His pace at the end of the test is very respectable, especially considering that there were only two bikes out there on track and with cooler conditions and no rubber being laid down the conditions were not as good as they were at the race weekend last month."

Bautista and Capirossi will now be sidelined by the enforced winter test ban that comes into operation at the end of this month and ends at the beginning of February next year. The pair will next be in action at Sepang in Malaysia in early February as the team and factory continues to prepare for the 2010 MotoGP season.

The first race of next season gets underway beneath the floodlights at Losail in Qatar on Sunday April 11.

Dainese airbag gets MotoGP test

From motogp.com

The activation of the D-Air Airbag - worn by Jorge Lorenzo - on the fourth lap of the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana, due to his sudden near high-side, provided manufacturers Dainese with valuable technical feedback.

The Italian company has revealed that the system worked correctly and did not affect Lorenzo’s perception when driving, after reviewing the data provided by the telemetry on board.

Dainese concluded that, “Analysis of the lap times for that section of the track indicated a delay of at least six to seven tenths of a second, mainly due to the loss of equilibrium and opening of the Airbag, which then deflated on course, resetting itself within approximately 20 seconds.”

For technicians of the company, this supports the safety of the system and indicates that the inflation of the D-Air has no detrimental effect on the capacity of the rider to control the bike and continue in the race, provided of course that the cause of the sharp change in direction does not result in a fall.

Lorenzo’s sharp and quick moment on lap 4 activated the Airbag, and by sensing the danger the D-Air inflated before any possible impact. Although Lorenzo noted that he lost valuable seconds in his pursuit of Valentino Rossi in the race, he has already made clear that he wishes to continue using the Dainese D-Air.

Norton coming to Canada

From Norton Motorcycles (Canada) Ltd.

'Unapproachable Norton' was a term used to describe the superiority of the Norton race bikes when, as world champions, they were the envy of the world. Unapproachable certainly isn’t how the Canadian distributors found Norton owner Stuart Garner and his team, building a new generation of Norton motorcycles in the UK.

One of the partners of Norton Motorcycles (Canada) Ltd. visited Garner’s Norton display of clothing, accessories and the new 961 Commando on the Isle of Man during the 2009 TT races in June. After being inspired by the new iteration of the iconic brand, some months of hard work followed, culminating in the acquisition of distribution and licensing rights for Canada. A national dealer network will be established in the future. In the interim, operations will be centred in Newmarket, ON.

‘Stunning’ is probably the best word to describe the appearance of the new Commando. With distinct retro looks, it retains the classic lines of the parent 750/850 Commando model of the 1970’s with all the benefits of the 21st century. Had that bike remained in production until the present day this is probably how it would have evolved.

Credit the styling to American Kenny Dreer and the engineering to ex-Triumph designer Simon Skinner. Skinner, who is now Norton’s Chief Design Engineer, has such notable bikes in his portfolio as the 675 Triumph Daytona. Under his advice Garner and Norton chose MCT to re-engineer, develop and build engines and transmissions for the production bike. MCT’s services include development of electronic engine management and emission compliance.

In addition to the motor, quality extends throughout the bike with high end Ohlins suspension, Brembo brakes, VDO instruments and BST carbon fibre wheels. Garner has committed Norton to producing a very exclusive hand built product. Production levels for worldwide consumption will remain low for the foreseeable future thus ensuring exclusivity.

Production of 200 Special Edition 961 Commandos has already started. Each bike is numbered and certificated to the owner. A Platinum Package will accompany each bike. It consists of a matching serialized Norton/Bremont wrist watch, a Norton/Arai helmet and a Norton Jacket.

Of the 200 SE’s being produced for world consumption, 20 bikes and Platinum Packages will be available for the Canadian market serialized from #100. Delivery is expected in July 2010. Deposits will be taken following the Dec. 11–13 Toronto Motorcycle Show where Norton Motorcycles (Canada) Ltd. will display an SE Commando, an NRV588 rotary race bike and Norton motorcycle clothing and accessories.

Of special note will be the attendance of Peter Williams, a very successful and famous Norton engineer and racer who almost singlehandedly kept Norton’s racing Commandos competitive late into the 1970’s. He joins the new Norton team as the Technical Director of Norton’s electric motorcycles. Williams will be available to answer questions about this exciting new area within the motorcycling world and of course, about Norton’s racing history.

Banderas backs Moto2 team

From motogp.com

Another step in the preparation for the inaugural Moto2 season in 2010 was taken this week as confirmation came that Promoracing plan to race in the new category, with backing from Spanish actor Antonio Banderas.

Team manager Dani Devahive explained to motogp.com that his Promoracing outfit – currently preparing for the final round of the CEV Buckler 2009 (Spanish National Championship) in Valencia this weekend – will race as ‘Team Jack & Jones by Antonio Banderas’ in the Moto2 category next year, with title sponsorship due to be signed this week.

A rider line-up of Joan Olivé, who finished this year’s 125cc World Championship in ninth place, and Kenny Noyes will take to the track for the team, after both had their first experiences on the Promoracing Moto2 machine during last week’s Valencia test.

“We're very happy as after 10 years of hard work in the Spanish Championship and other various international projects, we have finally reached our goal: to move up to the World Championship with our own team, two riders and a strong technical structure. The new Moto2 class is the best possible opportunity for us to showcase our potential,” Devahive told motogp.com.

“Antonio is a big fan of motorcycling and he first became involved in the project when we were looking for a sponsor. He had a look at our history and what we have achieved in the Spanish Championship and decided to commit himself to our project, becoming the team owner. Within the team he'll be a great source of inspiration and motivation for the riders and everybody, but he will also raise the media exposure of the team, which will be important for us to secure more resources and ultimately get more and more competitive.”

The unveiling of the team is due to take place in Madrid in late January or early February of 2010, and Devahive explained the long-term aim for a premier class package.

“With a very busy schedule, it won't be easy for Antonio but he'll try and come to as many races as possible. He's used to waking up at 4am to watch the races as he lives in Los Angeles!” Devahive said.

“He's very keen on this project and just like me, the ultimate goal is to race in the MotoGP class. Looking at how things are going and at the possible rule changes, it seems that within a couple of years a privateer team will be able to move up to MotoGP, with the adequate sponsorship and media profile. That's our target and that's why Antonio wanted to come into the Championship with a new team, starting from scratch and building a new outfit.”

Female Ride Day set for 2010

From Motoress

TORONTO, ON – Women riders maintain momentum throughout the year by revving up programs in preparation for the 2010 International FEMALE RIDE DAY on May 7. The globally synchronized day, flagged for the first Friday of May each year, will celebrate its fourth year highlighting and promoting women motorcycle enthusiasts around the world.

“The number of women bringing motorcycling to the forefront of their lives continues to be relevant with each riding season that passes,” says Vicki Gray, campaign founder. “They come from a diversity of locations and cultures, but all share a passion for motorcycling. Women are the ‘rider force’ to be reckoned with today and there are fewer and fewer reasons for women not to get involved.

"As in every aspect in life, women now have more role models and mentors to inspire them. Also, the industry supplies further support by way of more female-friendly machinery and women’s clothing to better accommodate our gender, as well as providing more available resources, such as are offered by MOTORESS online. In fact, being that our lifestyles and roles as women has grossly broadened to include a multitude of ‘hats’ there’s a greater need for an outlet, for escape."

Sport bike, cruiser, scooter, off-road, touring or competition, regardless of what type or style of motorcycle interest, International FEMALE RIDE DAY makes one simple request of women – Just Ride! The concept has gathered its power and support in this simple, synchronized theme linking women by this common activity around the world.

At its inception in 2007, the campaign became an immediate success as women embraced the chance to participate in the day. International FEMALE RIDE DAY fever significantly magnifies each year and 2010 expects to yet again break records in rider involvement. Canada, United States, South Africa, Australia, Greece, Italy, Poland, Israel, Qatar as well as other countries will again be contributing to the campaign in compelling numbers.

In addition, KTM North America will support motorcycling's history as a sponsor of the 2009 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, which is the following evening, Dec. 5, at the same location.

"KTM North America will be a familiar sponsor to the AMA racers who will be recognized at the AMA Racing Championship Banquet, presented by KTM North America," said AMA Special Events and Marketing Manager Tigra Tsujikawa. "KTM North America's dedication to racing has helped the marque compile a storied legacy in U.S. motorcycle racing, which dates to the Penton brand that ultimately became KTM, making the company's support for the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony appropriately fitting."

KTM North America President Jon-Erik Burleson said that being involved with the AMA Racing Championship Banquet, presented by KTM North America, is an opportunity for the company to demonstrate its commitment to racers.

"The sport of amateur motorcycle racing goes hand in hand with our KTM 'Ready to Race' philosophy, and we feel it is most important to be involved with racers at the amateur level, whether they are young or old," Burleson said. "Riding success and championships are important to KTM now and in the future, and we are thrilled to be a part of this event and help honour the champions of the 2009 amateur racing season."

YART wins World Endurance finale

From Yamaha Racing

The Yamaha Austria Racing Team took yet another race win last weekend at the 8 Hours of Doha, Qatar, the final round of the 2009 FIM World Endurance Championship.

The impressive ride to victory by YART riders Igor Jerman, Steve Martin and Gwen Giabbani, who led the entire race from the first lap, gave Yamaha enough points to claim the 2009 FIM World Endurance Manufacturer title. YART had already sealed the teams championship at the previous round in September but kept the pressure on for the final race to take a clean sweep for Yamaha.

“We had some problems at the Bol d’Or round and Suzuki passed us in the manufacturer’s championship standings,” said YART Team Manager Mandy Kainz. “So we came here to Qatar to win. The race was perfect, there were no mistakes and it was a good weekend for us, as it was usually over the year. We also wanted to finish on the podium on Sunday, it was the best way to finish the year.”

Positive response to new MotoGP tire

From motogp.com

There was a good response from riders and teams at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit to the new rear tire spec rolled out by Bridgestone at the post-season three-day test in Valencia last week.

After its first year as sole tire supplier to the premier class, Bridgestone used the test to introduce a new medium compound asymmetric rear tire during the second and third days at Valencia.

The results and feedback were positive, with performance better than the successful 2009 medium asymmetric compound used during the Valencia race, where it was the softer of the available options. Casey Stoner was the fastest rider across the three days of testing, with a best lap of 1:31.900 – just over three tenths of a second quicker than his pole position time.

“Our new specification medium compound asymmetric rear tire is based on new rubber which we tested in Qatar and Jerez during winter testing,” explained Tohru Ubukata, Manager of Motorcycle Race Tyre Development at Bridgestone. “Our target for this new rear tire was to achieve a wider operating range and greater consistency, and I can say that the result was what we expected, and was successful.

"All the riders tried our new rear tire during the test and already the results are promising, the lap times look good, and rider feedback is positive.

“During the test the temperature was generally lower than during the Grand Prix so it was a challenge for the tires to reach the optimum working temperatures, but even in these difficult conditions our new specification worked well so I am confident for the performance of this new tire next season.”

Stoner fastest on final test day

From motogp.com

The final day of the post-season MotoGP test at Valencia concluded with Casey Stoner the fastest rider at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

Stoner led the lap times on Wednesday, as he finished the first phase of the fine-tuning of his Ducati Desmosedici machine with a best time of 1:31.900.

Testing new forks and a revised engine configuration on his factory prototype before the test was wrapped up at 1pm, Stoner put in 35 laps during the session, with his top time placing him 0.044 secs. ahead of Dani Pedrosa.

“We were able to understand the bike a little better today and the fantastic weather conditions certainly helped. It was a pleasant surprise when we got up this morning and it allowed us to work well,” said Stoner.

“I’m satisfied with this three-day test and with the new characteristics of the bike, in particular the extra traction in corner exit. It is still difficult to figure out exactly the best time to open the throttle, but we’re getting there and it is a case of more practice and improving the set-up.”

Pedrosa, who has been testing Ohlins suspension on his 2010 RC212V prototype, was the only other rider to break the 1:32 barrier, with Stoner’s team-mate Nicky Hayden completing what has been a strong test for the Ducati factory bikes as he ranked third fastest, just under a second off his Australian colleague’s pace.

“We worked on confirming a few things today and I think we found what we were looking for,” he said. “I like the changes we’ve introduced to the bike; the power delivery is definitely more progressive although we still need to find the ideal setting for it. I’m happy – I think we’re on the right track and have had three important days here that should help us make a lot of progress in the next test, and close the gap to the front guys down even more.”

Andrea Dovizioso made a vast improvement on his previous two days’ work as he also came within a second of Stoner’s marker, completing a good final session for the factory Honda team.

Continuing his re-acquaintance with the Honda RC212V, Marco Melandri finished fifth quickest for the San Carlo Honda Gresini team.

The new aluminum swingarm used by Mika Kallio helped the Finn continue well on his Pramac Ducati, with new team-mate Aleix Espargaró also enjoying the last day of the test as his best lap saw him rank seventh-fastest as he took in 55 laps.

Loris Capirossi completed 43 turns on his Suzuki, while Héctor Barberá led the 250cc graduates with a best time of 1:33.787 on his Aspar Ducati, lapping at just under 1.9 secs. off Stoner.

Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini), Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Hiroshi Aoyama (Interwetten Honda MotoGP) were also present on the final morning of testing at Valencia as well.

Pirelli debuts latest tire in Milan

From Pirelli Moto

MILAN, ITALY – Pirelli Moto has announced the newest model in its Diablo family and the only hypersport tire for road and track use with WSBK technology: the Diablo Rosso Corsa. From the fast pace and intense SBK environment, where seven manufacturers and 30 world-class riders give feedback every weekend, is derived a superiority of tire performance through maximum versatility and easy bike setup.

Brand new for 2010, the Diablo Rosso Corsa situates itself in the performance demanding racing street segment. The new tire supplements the Diablo Rosso in Pirelli’s sport range and effectively replaces its acclaimed predecessor, the Diablo Corsa III, by measurably exceeding its key performance values.

The Diablo Rosso Corsa’s reach includes all competitive and passionate motorcyclists who push forward the limit from the mountain curves to the racetrack, specialists who can recognize the fine distinction between pure racetrack and pure road usage, and those who crave ultimate performances along with an aggressive tread design look. The new top-of-gamma for Pirelli Moto will feature a broader range of sizes, patented EPT contact patch technology, and a never doubted grip level from its III zones compound. Diablo Rosso Corsa fuses Pirelli’s renowned WSBK technology with maximum versatility to complement the high horsepower and handling capabilities of the modern sportbike line-up.

Diablo Rosso Corsa is credited with three patents, the foremost being Enhanced Patch Technology (EPT), derived from the WSBK experience for an optimized contact patch area at all lean angles on road and track, for true confidence and power transfer to the ground in any riding condition. EPT is complemented by the III zones compound rear tire, whose new compound in the central zone guarantees mileage and ample shoulder zone compound is straight from the WSBK arena. Diablo Rosso Corsa’s tread pattern includes a slick-like area on the rear shoulders while the tread grooves are selectively concentrated in the centre and shoulders, an aggressive tread design resulting in quick warm-up and consistent water drainage for great control on wet surfaces.

The Diablo Rosso Corsa will be available on the European market starting in January, 2010 starting from initial sizing: front 120/70ZR17, along with rear 160/60ZR17 (April 2009), 180/55ZR17, and 190/50ZR17 as well as the 190/55ZR17 size. More detailed information and videos of the Diablo Rosso Corsa as well as the entire range of Pirelli motorcycle tires can be found online at www.pirellimoto.com.

Kruger gets podium in China

By John Hopkins

Former Canadian road racing regular Dan Kruger picked up his first podium in the third round of the Pan Delta Series at the Zhuhai circuit in China Oct. 17-18.

Racing a Kawasaki ZX-6R entered by BG Performance in the 600 Supersport class, the onetime Montrealer has been working under the tutelage of U.S. racing ace Dave Sadowski in China.

Kruger has also received a wildcard entry for the final round of the Petronas Asia Road Racing Championship, back at the Zhuhai track on Dec. 11-13. He is reportedly the first North American to be accepted into the series.

"I'm not planning on a podium for this one but just being in the race is quite interesting," Kruger said in an email to Inside Motorcycles. "This series is a stepping stone to FIM World Supersport so these guys are really quite intense.

"They had to push hard to let me race in the upcoming event since it has up until now been riders from only Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, India and China. I had to go through a physical, and lots of red tape to even get into this event.

"Former AMA Daytona 200 Champion David Sadowski has really taken me under his wing in terms of getting me up to speed. It seems to be working. There has also been a lot of money invested by Kawasaki, BG, as well as supporting sponsors. This has been and is a really cool experience."

Lorenzo leads second day of test

From motogp.com

Aboard his Yamaha M1 prototype, Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest lap on the second day at Valencia, in his final session of the three-day test.

Lorenzo was the only rider to break the 1:32 barrier on Tuesday at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit, as he set the quickest lap with a 1:31.939.

Taking his factory bike round for 62 laps as he and Fiat Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi tested a new chassis – a new engine is expected to be available to work with in the new year – the Spaniard was 0.256 secs. faster than Monday’s quickest rider Casey Stoner.

On his Ducati Desmosedici meanwhile, Stoner was second fastest on the timesheet as he made 44 laps on the circuit, 12 more than he completed on Monday as the Australian continues to fine tune his 800cc race machinery.

World Champion Rossi emerged only in the afternoon, coming out onto the track just before 2pm to take his M1 out for the final time for this test, as he lapped at just over half a second slower than Lorenzo.

The focus of the Valencia test for Ben Spies remains acquainting himself with his Monster Yamaha Tech 3 bike as he tries various tire and wheel options, but the experimental nature did not stop the Texan from posting the fourth-fastest time of the day at just under half a second behind Rossi.

His team-mate Colin Edwards’ test appears to have come to a premature end however, as he failed to take part on Tuesday due to illness.

Nicky Hayden, who finished the season on a high with his fifth place in Sunday’s race, matched that placement on the timesheet as he recorded 84 laps on his factory Ducati. The 2006 World Champion was trying out the new rear spec Bridgestone tires for 2010, along with several other riders.

Ohlins suspension was again tested by Dani Pedrosa, as both he and Repsol Honda team-mate Andrea Dovizioso took their 2010 RC212V prototypes out for the second day. Sunday’s race winner Pedrosa was sixth fastest on Tuesday, with Dovizioso 12th as he continued to adjust to the weight distribution caused by the realignment of his engine. The Italian crashed shortly after 1pm, but was back out on the track shortly afterwards.

Randy de Puniet took his RC212V out as the LCR Honda team tested suspension and electronics updates on the Frenchman’s 2009 machine, in a bid to improve the rear set-up of the bike.

Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing), testing a new aluminum swingarm and Loris Capirossi (Rizla Suzuki) both came inside the top-10 lap times, as did Marco Melandri whose return to the San Carlo Honda Gresini team sees him riding the RC212V after a two-year absence.

New Pramac arrival Aleix Espargaró’s familiarization with the Ducati continued as he builds on his 13th-placed race finish from Sunday.

The four riders making the graduation from the 250cc class were also gaining more track time, as Héctor Barberá recorded the quickest time of the quartet. The Valencian rider was using the Desmosedici GP9 as he becomes accustomed to the power delivery offered by the 800cc machines. The Aspar rider has also been assigned three new crew members by Ducati Corse, and he completed 100 laps, the most of any rider on Tuesday.

Marco Simoncelli’s (79 laps) education on the Gresini Honda, Álvaro Bautista’s (74) on the Rizla Suzuki and Hiroshi Aoyama’s (88) on the Interwetten Honda all carried on as well.

Stoner sets early Valencia pace

From motogp.com

Casey Stoner was back out on the track at Valencia following his warm-up lap crash prior to Sunday’s MotoGP race and showed no signs of apprehension, as he set the first test day’s fastest lap on his Desmosedici.

Stoner had qualified on pole position for the final race of the season and on Monday afternoon he went round in a best time of 1:32.660, which topped the timesheet and left him 0.025 secs. clear of the rest of the field. It was the perfect response from the 2007 World Champion, who had stated his aim to use the disappointing end to his season to motivate himself in testing.

“We tried a new engine configuration designed at improving the rideability of the bike and for the moment it is going really well,” said Stoner. “The feedback is smoother and we improved traction with the same set-up we used over the weekend, so that is positive. We also tried some different forks and in general I am satisfied.”

Stoner set his hot lap on his 22nd of 32 turns, and added, “We didn't do many laps today – just tried to make sure we were working in the right direction. I think we are and I can't wait to get back on track tomorrow, when hopefully it won't be as windy.”

At such a close margin, Jorge Lorenzo’s intentions were clearly stated in second place as the 2009 World Championship runner-up kept a close tab on Stoner. The Spaniard was just over 0.1 secs. off his Sunday qualifying time on his factory Yamaha machine.

Valentino Rossi, who rounded off his championship-winning season with his 13th podium of the campaign at the weekend, rolled out a new prototype M1 on which he completed 37 laps, recording a best time which left him just 0.166 secs. down on Stoner’s time.

Fresh from his race win over the weekend, Dani Pedrosa ensured it was the Championship top four occupying the same spots on the first day. The Spaniard is testing two Honda bikes, one with the Showa suspension with which he started the season and one with the Ohlins system, which has been incorporated into the Repsol Honda package over the course of the season.

Within a second of Stoner’s time was his Ducati Marlboro team-mate Nicky Hayden, as was Ben Spies, whose first outing for Monster Yamaha Tech 3 was a productive day as the Texan completed 50 laps.

Andrea Dovizioso, also testing the Ohlins suspension on his Honda RC212V, Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) Randy de Puniet (LCR Honda) and Marco Melandri (San Carlo Honda Gresini) all also recorded top 10 lap times.

Experiencing their first tests on MotoGP machines were Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini), Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki MotoGP) and Héctor Barberá (Aspar Team), with newly-crowned 250cc World Champion Hiroshi Aoyama testing on Honda machinery.

Of the upcoming 250cc riders, Simoncelli was the fastest on day one of the test, completing 51 laps with a best time just over 2.5 secs. off Stoner.

Monday also saw further glimpses of the Moto2 prototypes being tested ahead of their introduction for the 2010 season, with CEV Buckler (Spanish National Championship) regular Kenny Noyes the fastest timed rider of a group which included Ratthapark Wilairot, Héctor Faubel and Scott Redding (all Stop and Go – FTR), Shogo Moriwaki (Gresini Moto2 Team – Moriwaki), and Joan Olivé (Promoracing – Promo-Harris).

Ruthless Racing shuts it down

By John Hopkins

Canadian road race team Ruthless Racing has officially closed its doors, team principal Darren James has told Inside Motorcycles.

The squad had anchored the Buell 1125R program in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship in 2008 and '09, with six-time Canadian champion Steve Crevier as lead rider. The termination of the Buell brand by parent company Harley-Davidson in the U.S. left the Vancouver-based team in a tenuous situation.

"We're finished," said James in a phone call last Friday. "We'll have a tough time finding another manufacturer, and with Yamaha pulling out there's one less involved. After nine years I have to close it down. It's not the way I wanted things to end but that's the situation."

James was a successful Buell runner in both Canada and the U.S., and won back-to-back Canadian Thunder titles on the national tour in 2005 and '06. In 2008 his Ruthless Racing team took on Buell's Superbike program in the Parts Canada Superbike series, with Crevier scoring a memorable third place finish on the 1125's debut at Calabogie Motorsports Park in May, 2008.

The team also helped launch the career of Brett McCormick, who ran for the squad in the Thunder class in 2006.

This past season Crevier, James and Dave Estok raced the 1125R in the Superbike and Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike classes. Crevier was fifth in the Superbike standings while he, Estok and James took fifth, eighth and 11th, respectively in Pro Sport Bike points.

It is unclear what the future holds for Crevier, one of the most successful racers in Canadian history. The 43-year-old was in Europe vacationing through much of October, and was due to return to Canada after taking in the final MotoGP round in Valencia, Spain last weekend.

Estok, a Floridian, will return to riding in the States, according to James.

James, meanwhile, is working on a plan to keep Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada involved in the national series with a spec class for the XR1200. Such a category already exists in England had has been propsed for the AMA Superbike Series in the U.S.

It is understood there is a Nov. 23 deadline for the Canadian plan to be presented to Parts Canada Superbike Championship organizer Professional Motorsports Productions and its partners.

Two more titles for Barkley

From EB Speed

Coming into the final event of the CMDRA's 2009 season, Ethan Barkley had a sizeable lead in both of his racing divisions. In the RCC Turbos Pro Street Series he had a 118-point lead, and a 116-point advantage in the Mission Springs Brewing Co. Street Series. Barkley only needed to qualify on both bikes to secure his seventh and eighth national titles.

Saturday's qualifying session went extremely well. Aboard his turbocharged '06 Suzuki GSX-R1000, Barkley posted a run his competitors won't soon forget. With the boost turned up and the track prep nearly perfect the scorboards flashed 7.608 at 187.22 in the second round. That was over a full tenth of a second quicker than Barkley's best pass to date, and was over three tenths ahead of his nearest competitor. On his '09 Suzuki Hayabusa, 'Snow White', Barkley continued to make smooth consistent passes in the Street class and qualified fifth out of 22 competitors.

Clear skies greeted racers and fans for Sunday's elimination rounds. First up was the Street Class '09 Busa. Barkley wasn't pushing the bike too hard and was running a fairly conservative dial-in of 9.55. He was focused all day, cutting great reaction times and making error free runs. After five rounds he found himself in the finals and ran a 9.56 to take the win.

Since Barkley qualified number one on the Pro Street GSX-R, he had a bye run in round 1. He decided to run a slightly more aggresive clutch tune-up to see if it would net a better time. Unfortuatnely the bike bogged slightly off the line and only ran an 8.22@186 mph. In round 2 the descision was made to see how much boost could be put through the 999cc motor. Barkley lined up against Ken Froese on his turbocharged Hayabusa. It was a great drag race, with Barkley pulling out the win with a record setting 7.653@194.59mph. That would stand as the fastest pass by a Canadian aboard a Pro Street motorcycle.

In the finals Barkley met number two qualifier Dave Burleigh on his turbocharged Hayabusa. Barkley decided to leave the same tune up in the bike. The GSX-R left the line extremely hard and was on a record pass until the 900-foot mark, when the motor started to backfire and lost power. He still took a convincing win over Burleigh's 7.977@183.78 mph with a stout 7.69 at a slowing 181mph.

It was a fantastic weekend for the Suzuki Canada/Walt Healy Motorsports/EB Speed team. A season's worth of hard work and dedication culminated in an outsanding performance for the year end event. Between the two bikes, Barkley placed first at five events and finished runner-up four times on the season. He now sits atop the CMDRA's all time win list and has an unprecedented 21 CMDRA records. Barkley has ammased an unmatched eight championships in just a seven-year career with the organization.

Big guns begin 2010 preparations

From motogp.com

A total of 17 MotoGP riders are expected to roll out of their pit-boxes for testing at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo circuit as of 1:00 pm on Monday, with two full days of testing to follow on Tuesday and Wednesday - as the teams start their fine tuning for the 2010 season.

The traditional post-season test will see all the premier class big guns in attendance, including Fiat Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo, Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa and Ducati Marlboro’s Casey Stoner.

The sessions will also provide a number of upcoming riders from the 250cc class with their first official run-outs with their new MotoGP teams, including new World Champion Hiroshi Aoyama (Paddock GP team, as yet name not finalized), 2008 250cc title winner Marco Simoncelli (San Carlo Honda Gresini), Álvaro Bautista (Rizla Suzuki) and Héctor Barberá (Aspar Ducati).

The Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team missed the equivalent test last year but it will be out in force on Monday as it officially welcomes newcomer Ben Spies on board alongside his fellow Texan Colin Edwards – after the pair enjoyed a successful day on Sunday in the MotoGP race with wildcard Spies helping Edwards clinch fifth place in the ’09 standings.

Marco Melandri will be back on the San Carlo Honda Gresini RC212V after two years away, while Aleix Espargaró will continue his MotoGP development with Pramac Racing after his successful series of guest appearances for the satellite Ducati outfit towards the end of this season.

Several Moto2 machines will also share the track with the MotoGP prototypes, as preparations continue for the introduction of the new category to the World Championship next year.

Moto2 test rides will be undertaken by Ratthapark Wilairot, Héctor Faubel and Scott Redding (all Stop and Go – FTR), Shogo Moriwaki (Gresini Moto2 Team – Moriwaki), Axel Pons (Pons Racing Pepe World – Pons Kalex), Joan Olivé (Promoracing – Promo-Harris) and Kenny Noyes (also Promoracing – Promo-Harris).

Successful first outing for Spies

From motogp.com

Before becoming incorporated into the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team on Monday in the post-race Valencia test American rider Ben Spies did a good job for Yamaha in Sunday’s final MotoGP contest of the year, crossing the line in seventh place – just ahead of Repsol Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso to help future team-mate Colin Edwards up the standings.

Edwards finished the race in fourth place himself, to leapfrog Dovizioso for fifth in the final 2009 classification, and then embraced and thanked his fellow Texan Spies after the Valencian extravaganza had concluded.

Riding in the colours of the Sterilgarda Yamaha Team this weekend and starting the race from ninth on the grid Spies rode a sensible but impressive race and will now enjoy three days with his new team in high spirits.

Reviewing the race he told motogp.com, “It was pretty good. I actually got a better start than I expected but in the first few laps I got shuffled around and bullied a little bit. I guessed that would be the case as I haven’t figured out how to get comfortable quickly on the tires. Eventually I slowly picked off some people with some smart passes, as I didn’t want to mess up anyone else’s championship position and I wanted to be clean, but still ride as hard as I could.

“I saw Dovizioso and then I was thinking about him and Colin and their battle and I managed to get past him. Then I kept my head down and tried to keep the laps fast and I recorded my best time on the last lap, so it was good. I didn’t do anything stupid and stack it up (crash), it was a good weekend and we got a top 10.”

“This result is like winning a World Superbike race for me in terms of the amount of satisfaction it has given me. These are the fastest guys in the world,” concluded Spies.

Pedrosa takes second win of season

From motogp.com

Dani Pedrosa doubled his race-victory tally for the MotoGP season in the final race of the year with a win at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit on Sunday, as Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo completed the podium.

It was a victory on home soil for Pedrosa at the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana, as the Repsol Honda man enjoyed a start-to-finish win.

The drama started before the race had even commenced, as pole position holder Casey Stoner’s high-side crash on the warm-up lap meant he was unable to take his place on the grid. That allowed Pedrosa to lead the charge from his position on the front row, and after taking the first corner in the lead the Repsol Honda rider never relinquished it, sealing third spot in the overall standings in the process.

The 24-year-old had stated in the run-up to the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana that he was desperate for a win to sign off his season, and after Stoner’s crash on the warm-up lap and subsequent non-start, Pedrosa led from the front row of the grid from start to finish.

“I’m very happy with this win because I really wanted it. All through the week I was thinking only about this race,” said Pedrosa. “In practice we struggled a lot, but the team did a great job and I want to thank them for the job they did. Also to all the fans that came to the track, they supported us and it’s unbelievable. I think they enjoyed the race.

“With Casey out of the race it was easier, but in the end we had a great race so thanks again to everyone around me."

World Champion Valentino Rossi followed the Spaniard home in second place, finishing 2.630 secs. behind Pedrosa as he ended his title-winning season with his 13th podium of the campaign.

The Italian’s Fiat Yamaha team-mate Jorge Lorenzo, who did well to hold onto his bike when a moment on the opening lap almost threw him off, was a further 0.283 secs. behind as he took third, having already sealed second spot in the Championship by virtue of Stoner’s non-start.

The Australian ended the season in fourth place overall, with Colin Edwards’ fourth place in the race allowing him to snatch fifth in the 2009 standings from Andrea Dovizioso.

Stoner was left in reflective mood after the high-side spill on his warm-up lap meant he was unable to take his pole position on the grid.

It was a frustrating end to the season for the 24-year-old, who had come back from an absence due to fatigue to score a second-placed finish and two wins in his last three races.

Aiming for a third straight win in Valencia after his triumphs at Phillip Island and Sepang, a problem with the tire temperature of the Ducati Marlboro rider’s Desmosedici GP9 saw him thrown from his machine, leaving him unable to start the 17th and final Grand Prix of the 2009 campaign.

“Obviously this is a frustrating and disappointing way to finish the season. There have been plenty of highs and lows throughout the year and we have ended on a low, but with another lesson learnt for next season,” said Stoner.

“We have had this strategy for two years and not had a problem until today so I guess it is better it happened here than in the first race of next season in Qatar. The important thing is that after back-to-back wins in Australia and Malaysia we have shown our pace here at Valencia and we know we have everything in place to be competitive next season if we do the job right over the winter.

"Now I am looking forward to working on the bike over the next three days and then spending a couple of months building up my physical fitness, which I haven’t been able to dedicate myself 100 per cent to for such a long time.”

The top five on the day was completed by Stoner’s Ducati Marlboro team-mate Nicky Hayden, who held off the challenge of Toni Elías as the Spaniard came in sixth in his final race with the San Carlo Honda Gresini team.

Wildcard rider Ben Spies rode to an impressive seventh-place finish, and in depriving Dovizioso of that spot – the Italian finished eighth – played a direct role in helping his future Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team-mate Edwards take fifth in the Championship.

There were also top-10 finishes for Rookie of the Year Mika Kallio (Pramac Racing) and Alex de Angelis (San Carlo Honda Gresini).

Hiroshi Aoyama was crowned 250cc 2009 World Champion after taking seventh position at the Gran Premio Generali de la Comunitat Valenciana on Sunday, following an eventful race which ended with Héctor Barberá (Pepe World Team) winning the last-ever quarter-litre Grand Prix in front of his home crowd.

Álvaro Bautista (Mapfre Aspar Team) and Raffaele de Rosa (Scot Racing) completed the podium, as Barberá won by a margin of 3.663 secs. and sealed second spot in the World Championship standings ahead of Marco Simoncelli.

Scot Honda rider Aoyama survived a run-off on lap 9, which dropped him down to 11th position – the lowest finish he could afford in order to claim the title – as an engrossing race then saw Simoncelli lose the front of his bike when going into turn two with seven laps to go, thus ending his race.

Julián Simón and Bradley Smith were again involved in a final-lap battle for victory at Valencia, with the 125cc 2009 World Champion coming out on top for the third successive race.

It was a third straight one-two for the Bancaja Aspar team-mates as the pair put on another engrossing display which went down to the last lap. Taking their contest to the very last corner of the race, Simón managed to hold off his rival for another thrilling finish, as he eventually finished 0.220 secs. ahead.

Spies impresses in Valencia qualifying

From motogp.com

Making just his fourth MotoGP appearance this weekend at Valencia, experiencing a new track and a new bike, Sterilgarda Yamaha Team wildcard Ben Spies performed well in qualifying on Saturday to qualify inside the top 10.

Spies, who made three guest appearances for Suzuki last year, has made steady improvements in each practice session so far this weekend on the Yamaha M1 and eventually put himself ninth on the grid at the Ricardo Tormo circuit.

“It’s better than I expected this early on, with just three hours on the bike, but the package is great,” said Spies after qualifying. “The bike is great, the tires are great, it’s just me now. I am slowly building up my faith in everything. It is not going to happen overnight, but I am quite pleased to be not so far off the other guys on the Yamaha.

“We’re competitive, so we have to try and get a good start in the race tomorrow, get in position to follow a few people and learn what we can. But it is a case of so far, so good. Every time we get on the bike we have to look at the lap time and make sure the gap to the front guys gets smaller and smaller. That’s what his weekend is for.”

Having qualified ahead of such established MotoGP stars as Loris Capirossi, Marco Melandri, Andrea Dovizioso and outgoing Tech 3 rider James Toseland, who the American replaces in MotoGP next year, Spies will not be intimidated in Sunday’s race but he does not underestimate his opposition.

He added, “I know who I am riding against and they are the world’s best riders, who have been on these bikes for a long time. So I can understand not being higher up the grid, and the riders around me are fast guys.”
