BMW pleased with Spanish test

From BMW Motorrad

Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport concluded its two-day test at the Circuit de la Communitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo in a happy frame of mind after making good progress.

Although there was no rain throughout the two days, conditions were far from ideal. Strong winds buffeted the circuit both days and there were not enough bikes circulating to lay down enough rubber for good grip. But, thanks to the commitment of both Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus and a tremendous all round effort, the team left the circuit happy and in a positive mood ahead of the next tests. Corser comfortably got into the low 1:36s, with Xaus improving strongly throughout to finish with a 1:36.5 - all on standard tires.

"Generally we’ve gained a lot of useful information for the engineers and technicians during these two days and if I had to race the bike tomorrow, I wouldn’t be unhappy at all," Corser said. "It’s been good to be able to do plenty of laps and now I feel very comfortable on the bike and I can ride it without thinking about it. We found a good set up for the suspension, both front and rear, improved the balance of the bike, the brakes and made the throttle connection more consistent."

"After Portimao, I wondered to myself how long it would take for me to understand this bike," Xaus admitted. "Troy has many years of four cylinder experience, but for me, riding this bike was not so easy and I knew that I would have to adapt to the bike instead of the other way round. The first day was not so good, but the team and I really worked hard and bit by bit we began to progress. I am still not fully comfortable with the bike and I have to understand fully where the limits are, but today was a bit of a breakthrough for me and I was so happy that I was able to do it."

Daytona to display American Veterans Wall

From Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, FL – The American Veterans Traveling Tribute and Traveling Wall will visit Daytona International Speedway Feb. 27–March 8 during Daytona 200 Week By Honda. Viewing is free to the public with access to the Memorial through the turn four tunnel.

The mission of the project is to travel the nation to honour, respect and remember men and women who served, and to pay specific tribute to those who gave all in that service. Since the tribute is mobile it allows people to honour and respect veterans and active military personnel without having to travel great distances to do so.

“We’re honoured to be able to display the American Veterans Traveling Tribute and Traveling Wall at ‘The World Center of Racing,’” said Speedway President Robin Braig. “The memorial on property will remind our fans of those who have served their country with great distinction.”

The AVTT presents several Cost of Freedom memorials and exhibits with its centerpiece being the Traveling Wall, an 80% scale version of the Viet Nam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C.

Across its 370-foot length, the wall contains every single name etched on the original. At its apex the memorial is an impressive eight-feet tall. The traveling wall was completed in early 1998 and began traveling that year. AVTT’s traveling wall is the largest Wall replica traveling the US.

Three Americans for Red Bull MotoGP Cup

From motogp.com

Four talented young riders - Benny Solis, Jr., Hayden Gillim, Jake Gagne and Joshua Hook - will take on the world during the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup campaign, joining 21 competitors hailing from France, Italy, South Africa, Great Britain, Spain, Sweden, Czech Republic and Austria.

"I think these young riders will do great," said Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup Riders Coach and 1993 World Champion Kevin Schwantz. "Three of them have experience in Europe and learned a lot at the Riders Cup events last year. Both at Indy and Valencia, we experienced wet weather and our kids did well in difficult situations.

"They will find all aspects of the MotoGP Rookies Cup a huge step towards trying to learn how to compete on a world level. It will be a huge challenge but also a great chance to show, on a world level, what kind of speed and motivation they really have."

Solis, Jr. and Gillim were invited to compete in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at the conclusion of the 2008 Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup season, based on their performances throughout the year. Solis, 14 years old, from North Hollywood, CA, won four races on his way to the series championship, and Gillim, also 14 years old, from Owensboro, KY, won two races and was the series runner-up.

Joining Solis and Gillim in Europe will be Gagne and Hook. Gagne, 15 years old, from Ramona, CA, was a two-time race winner in the 2008 Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup and was the top finisher for the U.S. team at the Red Bull Riders Cup races in Indianapolis and Valencia. Hook, 16 years old, from Taree, New South Wales, Australia, was chosen to compete in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup on the recommendation of Schwantz based on the strength of his performance at the official Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup Selection Event last October.

COHV applauds Government trail funding

From the MMIC/COHV

TORONTO, ON – The Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV) as a member of the National Trails Coalition (NTC) is pleased to learn that, in its 2009 budget, the Government of Canada is injecting $25 million into the construction of trail infrastructure across the nation.

New trail infrastructure provides a safe venue for a variety of trail users and creates a local economic development opportunity, particularly in rural and northern Canada.

“The National Trails Coalition was founded in 2007 in the belief that trail users and volunteer trail builders/managers can achieve much more by working collaboratively and supporting each other’s goals,” stated Bob Ramsay, President of the COHV. “That is the spirit in which we developed and submitted United for a Stronger Trails System to the Government of Canada and the announced $25 million in federal funding will significantly increase the level of trail building in the coming year and it will create a heightened level of cooperation among trail user groups as they rally behind a common purpose.”

The responsible use of off-highway vehicles (OHVs) is of great interest to the COHV, its member manufacturers such as Arctic Cat, BRP (Can-Am), Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Polaris, Suzuki, Yamaha, their distributors and the not-for-profit ATV and off-road motorcycle rider federations that have developed across the country.

COHV works closely with the national All-Terrain Quad Council of Canada (AQCC), the national Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada (MCC) and provincial ATV and off-road motorcycle rider federations to develop and expand core values through initiatives that offer solutions to concerns related to respecting private landowner properties, responsible environmental practices and rider safety and training.

“Our vision and that of our rider clubs and federations is one of a comprehensive linked, multiuse trail network developed through partnerships with all stakeholders,” commented Ramsay. “With health and physical fitness being top of mind for most families and for the health care system in Canada, we believe this is a great opportunity for all stakeholders to prove that being out on the trails, whether through non-motorized or motorized recreational use, is not only fun but contributes to individual and family well-being."

Over three million Canadians ride an ATV or off-road motorcycle on a regular basis each year. Find out more at: www.cohv.ca.

Lajoie eighth in Vegas

By John Hopkins

Nadine Lajoie placed eighth in the Solo Middleweight feature at the WERA West Championship round at Las Vegas Motor Speedway last weekend.

Starting from the third row on her Catalyst Reaction/Concept Five Honda CBR600RR Lajoie got a great start in Saturday's race and actually led into the first corner.

"I was really happy and had a lot of fun during that race, with a lot of battles with three or four different guys," Lajoie said. "I had a blast."

Things didn't go so well on a cold and windy Sunday, however, and Lajoie placed 11th in B Super Stock and 16th in C Super Stock.

A highlight of the weekend came in Friday practice, when on a wet track Lajoie was second fastest in the morning, despite very little running time.

"I was wishing it would rain all weekend, but unfortunately not," she quipped.

Lajoie is currently seeking backing to take part in an International Women's Race that will run as a support event to the French MotoGP round at Le Mans May 15-17.

"This is an opportunity, once in a lifetime, and if you can help in any way possible or if you are a girl who wants to participate, please contact info@nadineracing.com," she said. "They want to have 44 girls on the grid to promote this sport."

Riding Academy cracks milestone

From Yamaha Motor Canada

TORONTO, ON -- It’s never too early to start training to become the next Colton Facciotti and Yamaha has just the place to start. The Yamaha Riding Academy is proud to have trained over 20,000 up-and-coming motocross superstars across the country.

Operated by Canadian Motorcycle Training Services, the purpose of the YRA is to provide free basic motorcycle-riding instruction for boys and girls ages 6-12. What began in 1998 with only three PW-50 mini bikes, riding gear and staff stuffed in the back of a Toyota Camry has grown into a national program called the Yamaha Riding Academy. Traveling across Canada, the YRA’s knowledgeable and professional staff successfully trained over 3000 students in 2008 alone.

In celebration of this incredible achievement, one lucky rider won their very own PW-50 at the recent Vancouver Bike Show. Matteo De Vincenzi, a six-year-old dirt bike enthusiast, will be able to continue his riding education on his very own Yamaha PW-50.

Latest Triumph 675 hits showrooms

From Triumph Motorcycles

ATLANTA, GA -- Triumph has announced the release of the new 2009 Daytona 675, which just arrived at Triumph dealerships across North America.

Triumph’s award-winning Daytona 675 has been revised and updated for 2009 with a host of modifications that improve on the bike’s class-leading handling and performance. The bike that caused such a stir by becoming the first three-cylinder machine to enter the supersport class now weighs in at just 356 pounds and develops 126 bhp.

“Triumph has taken an evolutionary approach with the Daytona by applying experience from racing in the 2008 Supersport World Championship directly to the street version of the Daytona 675,” said Jim Callahan, North American Marketing Manager for Triumph Motorcycles. “The same technology that was used so successfully on the Supersport racing machines is now available as standard equipment on the 2009 production models that are in Triumph dealers across the country right now.”

The 2009 model’s 675cc three cylinder engine utilizes a rev limit that is 450rpm higher than the 2008 model and features the hydraulic cam chain tensioner and higher ratio first gear. The racing-inspired parts were formerly available as race kit options through Triumph dealers.

The bike also features a lighter exhaust system, a recalibrated fuel injection system and a revised cylinder head with new valves and a modified combustion chamber. These adjustments contribute to a seven-horsepower increase that brings power output to 126 bhp at 12,600rpm. The additional 450 rpm allows the engine to rev to a 13,950rpm redline.

New, lighter wheels give significant savings in unsprung weight and further help the bike’s excellent handling characteristics. A new magnesium cam cover also contributes to the weight-saving as a further benefit to racers and track day enthusiasts.

As could be expected from a bike with a racing pedigree, the Daytona 675 comes equipped with top-of-the-line suspension and brakes. The fully-adjustable 41mm upside down forks and rear monoshock unit both benefit from highly sophisticated high and low speed damping control, allowing riders to set their Daytona up with maximum accuracy. New radial-mount Nissin monobloc front brakes give even greater levels of stopping power and rider feedback.

The 2009 Daytona 675 has also been restyled with a new cockpit, headlamp and screen. It comes in two colour options, Jet Black and Tornado Red, and will come with a full range of official accessories.

The Triumph race kit and a new ‘plug and play’ quickshifter that are part of Triumph’s genuine accessories range will help assure the Daytona 675 will be competitive on the track at all levels.

The new Daytona 675 is available at authorized Triumph dealers throughout North America. Suggested retail in Canada is $10,799. To find a dealer, visit http://www.triumphmotorcycles.com/.

Capirossi confident in modified Suzuki

From motogp.com

Loris Capirossi is ready and raring for another season in the MotoGP World Championship, one that will see him riding a heavily redesigned Suzuki GSV-R for his second year with the Japanese factory. The Italian continues his preparations for the upcoming year alongside an almost complete lineup of premier class rivals next week at Sepang, and is eager to get back into action.

"I can't wait to ride again," says Capirossi, whose last test was a private run at Phillip Island at the end of 2008. "Over the winter break I have been getting motivated, and physically I am in great shape."

On the subject of shape, that of the GSV-R will be a different one to that of the bike that finished the most recent MotoGP season. Capirossi and teammate Chris Vermeulen have both taken part in wind tunnel testing in Japan in order to redefine the optimal form for the 2009 prototype, with the results used by engineers during the testing embargo.

"The aerodynamics, engine and chassis are all-new, and I am expecting a lot from them because of the hard work that has been going on in Japan. I´ve got high hopes because of this," says the veteran. "In Sepang we will be focusing on the setup; we don't care about the times at the moment. The goal is to be ready for the first race of the year, and to have the best season possible."

Capirossi's 20th season in Grand Prix racing will begin on April 12, at the opening round of the 2009 campaign in Qatar.

Motorcycle trio 11th in 24-hour

From AMA Pro Racing

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Motorcycle racers are some of the toughest competitors on the planet and star riders Jeff Ward, Scott Russell and Jason Pridmore proved it this past weekend in the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The two-wheel trio drove the No. 09 AMA Pro Racing/Spirit of Daytona Coyote-Porsche Daytona Prototype race car in the 47th annual running of America's premier endurance race and overcame more than their fair share of trouble to finish the day-long race that is held on the 3.56-mile road course at Daytona International Speedway.

Although the all-star riders are well familiar with Daytona from success in the Daytona 200 by Honda and the popular AMA Pro Supercross events held on the grass within the track's tri-oval, the Rolex 24 represented an entirely new challenge. The car the team drove was a Porsche Cayenne V8-powered Coyote Daytona Prototype entered and prepared by the Spirit of Daytona team that is headquartered just a few miles from the legendary racing facility known as the "World Center of Racing."

The three motorcycle veterans were joined by experienced sports car driver Guy Cosmo who, along with team owner Troy Flis, helped them through the ups and downs and various nuances of major league sports car endurance racing. In fact, an argument can be made that of all the teams that actually finished the 2009 Rolex 24 At Daytona - less than half of the 49 race cars that started - no team overcame more adversity than the No. 09 AMA Pro/Spirit of Daytona entry.

This included the only major fire of the race that happened in the team's pit stall just before Noon on Sunday, less than four hours from the finish. Russell was strapping into the car to start his next shift after Cosmo had just exited when something went wrong.

"Guy had just exited the car and was over the wall," said Russell, a five-time winner of the Daytona 200 by Honda. "I had my arms through the shoulder belts and I smelled it (fuel) instantly. They took the deck lid off and it flamed up. I dived out and luckily I wasn't strapped in."

Despite the spectacular looking incident the No. 09 was back in the race less than an hour later. The team ultimately took the checkered flag 11th in the Daytona Prototype class (23rd overall) after starting 13th.

"It was a good experience and I really enjoyed it," said Russell. "I can't say enough about the hard work that the crew put in, not only getting us back from the fire, but in the months leading up to the race."

Turner joins Team M4 Suzuki

From Team M4 Suzuki

Kris Turner will attack his rookie season of AMA road racing competition with Team M4 Suzuki support aboard a Suzuki GSX-R600.

The Chattanooga, TN resident will challenge for the 2009 AMA Pro SuperSport East Division crown, while also putting in select AMA Pro Daytona SportBike rides, along with a few non-points-paying appearances in AMA Pro SuperSport, West Division.

Just 16 years old, Turner has already demonstrated incredible potential. After getting his start aboard motocross bikes at the age of three, he graduated to road racing in 2005 on a YZ85 in CMRA and progressed to a 125 in WERA the following season.

In 2007 Turner took part in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and was regularly one of the fastest riders on the track, scoring a pair of podium finishes while performing on a global stage.

Kris took another step forward in 2008, claiming USGPRU 125cc GP and Moriwaki MD250H race victories, taking part as a wild card in the 125cc World Championship race at Indianapolis, and earning the 2008 WERA/Roadracingworld.com Young Gun Award due to his tremendous performance at the WERA Grand National Finals at Road Atlanta aboard a Team M4 Suzuki GSX-R600.

Turner backed up his GNF showing by finishing runner-up in the ASRA Superbike National and fourth place in the ASRA Factory Pro SportBike National at Daytona International Speedway, again aboard the M4 Suzuki.

"I'm pretty excited to finally get to race with the big guys," Turner said just over a month before the 2009 AMA season opener. "I feel pretty lucky to be working with the M4 Suzuki team. They've already helped me a lot and I think it's the best deal I could have right now."

Team M4 Suzuki Crew Chief Keith Perry said, "We got to work with Kris a little bit last year and clearly he has some natural ability -- there is no doubt about that. He's coming off of racing two-strokes and last year he got his first real experience with four-strokes. I think he may have had some growing pains at first, but he really adapted well to the 600."

Harley releases new Sportster

From Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada

MILWAUKEE, WI – With a defiant attitude embracing the pure essence of riding, the new Iron 883 is the latest Harley-Davidson Dark Custom motorcycle.

Harley-Davidson Sportster models like the Iron 883 have stood against the grain since their introduction in 1957, when the modern rebel culture was being bred from restless veterans and hot rod pioneers. The Sportster models became the starting point for many legendary choppers of the 1960s, while also getting pumped up for championship dirt racing and daredevil stunt riding in the 1970s.

The Iron 883 bike keeps that rebellious tradition with responsive handling, smooth clutch effort, and a durable, carbon reinforced drive belt, while pushing the styling of motorcycling minimalism to the edge. Decked in black from fender to fender, the new Harley-Davidson Iron 883 brings the beat of an 883 Evolution engine, backed up by a combo of gritty, old-school garage features like front fork gaiters, drag style handlebar, and side-mount license plate holder.

The Iron 883 starts at just $9,569 Canadian MSRP, leaving plenty of freedom for customization.

“This bike has so much potential for creative customization and comes with a very attractive price tag which will make it all the more fun to tailor to individual taste,” said Ric Marrero, Marketing Programs & Events Director for Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada.

As the latest of the Harley-Davidson Dark Customs, the Iron 883 bike is stripped down and ripe for custom creativity. Dark Custom motorcycle riders have the youngest average age for Harley-Davidson buyers. Soul mates of the Iron 883 include the Nightster, Night Train, Cross Bones, Fat Bob, and Street Bob motorcycles. Check out more on Dark Custom motorcycles at www.harley-davidson.com/darkcustom.

The Iron 883 bike is available in Black Denim and Brilliant Silver Denim colours.

Pacific school adds scooter course

From Pacific Riding School

SURREY, BC - A unique scooter riding course has been introduced by Pacific Riding School (PRS). The two-day PRS scooter course teaches the skills riders need to safely and confidently ride a scooter on the Lower Mainland's streets.

"Because scooter license requirements differ from motorcycles, the two-day course is designed to teach riders how to commute using scooters safely and with ease," said PRS co-owner and instructor Mark Kruger.

The course is taught using Honda Jazz scooters. PRS provides the scooters, helmets and riding gear.

"Riding a scooter has become a popular way to commute and they are a lot of fun, but being safe and in control on the streets takes more than self-taught riding skills," said Kruger.

Students learn how to safely control a scooter in a variety of road conditions and speeds as well as how to avoid hazards on the street. Basic skills such as low- and high-speed maneuvering, braking and techniques to avoid collisions are taught as instructors lead students through a mixture of riding situations.

Pacific Riding School, based in Surrey, BC, provides training for novice, intermediate and advanced riders. Visit www.pacificridingschool.com for additional information.

Byrne ends test fastest

From worldsbk.com

The last day of World Superbike Championship official testing at Portimao on Sunday was affected by adverse weather conditions, and thus the absolute best times of the entire test were largely set on Saturday, leaving Shane Byrne as the new track pacesetter on his private Sterilgarda Ducati.

"I didn't expect to be fastest in the test to be honest but I'm not surprised," declared 'Shakey'. "The bike's working really well and the relationship and feedback with the team and my engineer is great."

Only two top riders improved their weekend times on Sunday -- Troy Corser, who was finally ranked an impressive 11th on the all-new BMW four-cylinder, and Max Biaggi on the v-four Aprilia, who went 18th.

With new rules in place for both Superpole qualifying and flag-to-flag races each was given a trial run on Sunday. In Superpole there will now be 20 riders in the qualifying group, which then drops to 16, then eight in the final 12-minute session, which determines the polesitter. The top 20 riders from this weekend's sessions went forward to practice this discipline on Sunday.

The flag-to-flag practice was included in the very last practice session of all three days, with riders coming in to change to their spare bikes when the signal was given, without any interruption of the simulated race session.

Many of the top teams now leave Portimao to get to Phillip Island well in advance of the race, to undergo their own private test sessions before the start of the season, in just over one month's time.

After less than ideal weather conditions intervened on the final day of Supersport testing the best times for all 29 riders were set on Saturday, leaving Spaniard Joan Lascorz (Provec Motocard Kawasaki) the fastest rider of all.

The all-new Kawasaki ZX-6R was followed home by the Yamaha R6 of class rookie Cal Crutchlow (Yamaha World Supersport Team), then 2007 World Champion Kenan Sofuoglu (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) who was fastest on Sunday, but third quickest overall.

Miguel Praia (Parkalgar Honda) was half a second from the quickest testing time in fourth, while 2008 champion Andrew Pitt (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) rounded out the top five.

The first ranked Suzuki was the Pioneer Hoegee GSX-R600 of Barry Veneman, seventh, while the top Triumph 675 was Gianluca Nannelli's BE1 triple, ninth but third in Sunday's changeable sessions.

High winds were also a feature, with riders having to allow for their changes of direction and intensity, which also held down lap times. The highest lap count, over all three weather affected days, was 114 for Patrick Vostarek's Czech Intermoto Honda.

Christie joins forces with Prostar

From Roz-Gar Racing

KEENE, ON -- Roz-Gar Racing has announced its championship winning rider Jodi Christie of Keene, ON has joined forces with Joel Nodell and Ben Gartner of Prostar Motorsports to compete in the upcoming Parts Canada National Superbike Series and the RACE Regional Series for 2009.

After the news Jan. 15 of the cancellation of the Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup team manager Gary Christie immediately set to work exploring options to secure a team and motorcycle to move back into the Canadian Series.

“The Red Bull deal appeared to be a great opportunity for Jodi," Gary Christie said. "The chance to train and ride with world class people on a world class team only comes up so often. We had centered all our efforts towards that effort. We would like to thank Red Bull and Kevin Schwantz for everything that they did provide and accept the reasons for the cancellation."

Understanding the need to move forward quickly the Roz-Gar team entered into talks with Prostar Motorsports. The team has the experience and dedication to run a Pro effort and provide Jodi with the guidance and machinery to run at that level.

At this time talks are in progress to secure motorcycles for the upcoming series and although late in the season there are doors opening.

Jodi Christie is excited to be back in the series and race the tracks he did in 2008 on his way to winning three number one plates and many other awards. Stepping up to the Pro level he understands will be a learning year and he is ready for the challenge with the same positive outlook he carried through last season.

McCormick goes solo with Suzuki

From Picotte Performance/Blackfoot/Team Suzuki

CALGARY, AB -- Brett McCormick will join Picotte Performance/Blackfoot/Team Suzuki to ride in both the Parts Canada Superbike and Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike classes aboard Suzuki GSX-R1000 and GSX-R600 machines in 2009.

“I am thrilled to be back for 2009 with my partners from past years, Suzuki Canada and Pascal Picotte," said Pat Chambers, president of Blackfoot Motorsports. "I feel that we can provide the best possible team infrastructure for our rider, and having Brett McCormick as our sole rider just adds to the quality of our effort.

"Brett is certainly the most promising rider in Canada today. He is mature, intelligent and a quick learner. We will provide him with the best possible support, and I am sure that 2009 will be his and our year.”

“We are very glad to come back in 2009 with our partners from last year," said Mark Jeffery, General Manager of Suzuki's Motorcycle, ATV and Marine Division. "We know and appreciate the people, and the work we have accomplished together in the past years will serve us well in 2009.

"Economic conditions have meant that we will now focus on one rider, and I know that we have picked the right one. Brett is quick, and will get even quicker as the season progresses. This is the continuation of a great partnership and I look forward to a fruitful season in both classes.”

The 17-year-old McCormick is preparing for the most important season of his young career.

“It is certainly going to be an exciting season for me," the Saskatoon native said. "Pascal has a great deal of racing and tuning experience at the top level, and I know I will learn a lot from him over the season.

“I will focus on speed and winning in the first part of the season, and let the points take care of themselves. By mid-season, we will see where we are and race accordingly. Now I need to get in racing shape before the season starts, so I will run at some track days in California, then test at Jennings with the team, and maybe race once or twice before the season starts up here.”

Villa returns to Roadracingworld.com

From Team Roadracingworld.com

Former Colombian Superbike champion and CCS regional champion Santiago Villa of Colombia will return to race for Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki in 2009. Villa will enter the AMA Daytona Sport Bike class on board Suzuki GSX-R600 machinery.

Crew chief James Lickwar and mechanic Peter Hively will serve as Santiago's crew.

"I'm very excited to race again with the team. With all the changes in the AMA, it's going to be a great season," said Villa, a multi-time champion in his native country who joined Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki in 2008.

"I'm going to have a new crew this year and I think that James and Peter are going to help me achive my goals. I have seen their work and I admire them a lot. I can only expect great things from them."

In addition to his talent, Villa has shown remarkable toughness in his time with the team. After suffering serious burns in a fall 2007 pit lane refueling incident at the Daytona International Speedway while racing for a different team, Santiago worked hard in his recovery to be ready for the 2008 season. Villa showed speed and promise in the early rounds despite still struggling with his injuries, but had another setback when he broke his femur and hip in a mid-season crash.

"The team is really excited to have Santiago back," said Team Roadracingworld.com's Chris Ulrich. "He really made some great progress on the Superstock bike last year before he got hurt again. We were really bummed because he had worked so hard and was really showing something.

"A lesser man might have thrown in the towel after some of the things that happened to him along the way but he's a true racer with more determination and desire than ever. He's one of those guys willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals."

Kawasaki backs Pacific school

From Pacific Riding School

SURREY, BC -- Pacific Riding School (PRS) and Canadian Kawasaki Motors Inc. have announced an innovative program that provides PRS students enrolled in its regular motorcycle training courses with the opportunity to receive a $1,500 credit towards the purchase of a new Kawasaki motorcycle.

"Canadian Kawasaki and the Lower Mainland Kawasaki Dealers are excited to be able to work alongside PRS by introducing this program in 2009," said Chris Pearson, BC/Yukon District Manager for sales and distribution. "Each week one successful PRS student will be awarded a $1,500 Unit Credit, applicable towards the purchase of any new Kawasaki street bike."

Beginning February 2009, and running weekly until the last Wednesday in October 2009, a PRS student with the highest combined test results (written and practical) will be presented with the $1500 Unit Credit. A specific Lower Mainland Kawasaki Dealer will sponsor each weeklong course and the $1500 Unit Credit will be redeemable at that Dealer's location.

"It's only natural that the number one motorcycle school in BC offer students an opportunity to purchase quality products," said PRS co-owner and instructor, Mark Kruger. "The credit program gives students an extra benefit and is one more example of our commitment to world-class training and safe motorcycling."

Pacific Riding School, based in Surrey, BC, provides training for novice, intermediate and advanced riders. Courses consist of classroom workshops, riding sessions conducted in a controlled environment, and supervised road rides. Motorcycles, helmets and riding gear are provided by PRS.

New sponsor betting on WSBK Kawis

From Paul Bird Motorsport

Hot on the heels of the recent announcement that loyal long-term sponsors Vent Axia and Kick Energy were to back Paul Bird's works Kawasakis in the 2009 World Superbike Championship, the team has secured another lucrative deal with gaming giants SuperCasino.com.

SuperCasino.com was launched in October, 2008 and is the new home of Live Roulette, Live Blackjack and the other games. It is part of the NetPlay plc group of companies and is the latest brainchild of Martin Higginson, who was the man behind Bird's long-term association with Monstermob.

After a couple of years away from the sport, the lure and excitement of the PBM team being awarded the official contract to run the works Kawasaki team in WSB meant Higginson saw an ideal opportunity to re-establish his association with the team that won three British Championships in his colours.

Now with the impressive new workshop facilities built and with riders Broc Parkes and Makoto Tamada enjoying a successful test at Almeria last week before the official WSB tests in Portugal this weekend, anticipation is high.

"Paul's team will be a major player in this year's World Superbike Championship so the time was right for us to link up again. We wanted a professional and successful platform to continue the fantastic growth of our SuperCasino.com brand and I know Birdy's the man to do that for us in WSB. I'm delighted to be part of this and along with the other sponsors, I can't wait to go racing," said Higginson.

Bird is also very enthusiastic about the deal.

"Martin and I have been friends for years and when he suggested coming on board, I leapt at the chance to work with him again. We haven't even discussed a budget yet but I'm sure that won't be a problem and we hope for this to be another long-term association as when he's with us, he brings us a lot of luck!"

The first round of the series takes place at Phillip Island in Australia on March 1.

Canadian Enduro series gears up

From World Enduro Canada

This year marks a new chapter in Canadian off road history with a true National Enduro Series that will put the top Western riders against the best in the East.

The World Enduro Canada (WEC) sanctioned Canadian Enduro Championship (CEC) will utilize the European enduro format used in the ISDE and World Championship series with separately scored two-day events running on a closed course with electronically timed special tests determining the winner.

Currently the rider considered to be one of the fastest in Canada is Jake Stapleton, an Australian who competed successfully in the World Championship for a few years before moving to Canada. Stapleton immediately raised the level of competition in Canada with his speed and it will be interesting to see him go head to head against the top western Canadian riders like Cory Grafunder and Shane Cuthbertson.

Stapleton’s Yamaha teammate Brian Wojnorowski, who has been a successful Six Days rider and last year’s Canadian Enduro Champion will be pushing for the podium at every event. Other top contenders will be the boys from Quebec -- Guy Giroux, Alan Lachapelle and Patrick Beaule -- and the Americans who enjoy coming north to try and take home trophies.

The Canadian motorcycle industry has fully embraced the new series. Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki, KTM and BMW have all gotten on board. Brian Kurtz Trucking and West Jet are the official transportation sponsors.

In order to reduce travel time and expense the rounds will be run on back to back weekends so riders traveling across the country can do the two “away” rounds in a bit over a week. To reduce riders' costs even further World Enduro Canada has sweetened the pot by waiving the entry fees for the riders who cross the Manitoba/Ontario border to get to their respective “away” rounds.

The locations and dates are: Pincher Creek, AB July 4-5; Okanogan Valley, BC July 11-12; Labelle, QC Sept. 12-13; Parry Sound, ON Sept. 19-20.

World Enduro Canada in partnership with sponsor Brian Kurtz Trucking has made it easy and cost effective to get motorcycles and equipment to the “away” events. For $700 bike and gear (rate includes space for a gear bag, gas can and spare tires) gets a round trip voyage to either the two western rounds in July or for the western riders, the two eastern rounds in September.

Riders will deliver their bike and gear to one of the specified drop locations where Kurtz Trucking will load it up and deliver directly to the paddock of both events. This will be a dedicated truck that will stay at the events and depart for the second event only when all the riders have had a chance to get their bikes ready for the next race. It will then arrive at the second event a day or two in advance.

For the Eastern riders they will be able to drop/pick up their motorcycles at either KTM head office in Montreal or at Brian Kurtz Trucking in Guelph, ON. The drop off window in Quebec will be June 15–23 and for Ontario riders June 22–26. The bikes will then be available to pick up after July 20.

The pick up and drop locations for the Western rounds are at Southwest Motorrad in Kelowna, BC and Outback Motoextreme in Taber, AB. The drop off window will be Aug. 17-21. The pick up dates will be after Oct 1.

There is limited space available on the truck so it is important to make a reservation as early as possible. A $200 deposit is required to secure the reservation. For more information or to book a reservation please contact Trevor Wideman at Brian Kurtz Trucking tjw@kurtztrucking.com or 519-836-5821.

For further information on the series go to the World Enduro Canada website www.worldendurocanada.com.

RELENTLESS SUZUKI WINS TOP TEAM AWARD

From Team Suzuki

Relentless by TAS Suzuki crowned a successful 2008 season at last weekend's Irish Racer Motorcycle Awards, lifting the highly-acclaimed Team of the Year award for the fifth time in six years.

For his double TT success in Superbike and Superstock, his second place in the Senior TT and two podiums at the North West 200, Australian Cameron Donald added to the team's haul of silverware on the night, taking the International Road Racer of the Year award.

Ian Lowry also capped a successful 2008 British Supersport campaign, finishing runner-up in the Short Circuit Rider of the Year category to World Superbike star Jonathan Rea.

The gala black tie ball - attended by 550 guests - is Ireland's leading awards ceremony for the stars of two-wheeled motorsport.

Philip Neill - Team Principal:

"It is very pleasing indeed to be voted Ireland's top motorcycle racing team and also to receive this prestigious award for the fifth time at Ireland's leading motorcycle awards ceremony. I have said it before, but my Father and I really could not compete at the top level of racing without the efforts of our dedicated workforce, and of course the quality riders who we are privileged to work with; this award really is testament to their efforts.

"We are also indebted to our wide variety of partners, many of whom have supported TAS Racing from the very beginning. These include Suzuki GB, Relentless Energy Drink, Beacon Security, Pirelli tires and GMC Graphics. Finally, I would like to thank our current sponsors and the panel of expert judges who once again voted for our team on the night."

Endurance rules are now posted in the 2009 rulebook and licenses and free practice certificates will be mailed out shortly.

Race City nears moment of truth

By John Hopkins

"D-Day" for the long term future of Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park now appears to be next Monday, Jan. 26.

On that day a report from the city's Land & Asset Strategy Committee will be presented to City Council. The report will provide an assessment and recommendations on the dispute between the city and Race City owner Art Mackenzie over the future of the facility beyond the end of the 2009 race season.

MacKenzie leases the land the race track is on from the City of Calgary, but the city wants to reacquire the land for a storm water retention pond.

Although no details of the Land & Asset Strategy report can be made public until next Monday, sources indicate it does not like good for Race City.

Complicating matters is the fact that Mackenzie said in an article in the S.E. Calgary News that he has a valid lease for the property until 2025. According to the S.E. Calgary News article, the City contends the lease had actually expired in 2000.

The Parts Canada Superbike Championship confirmed last week it will stage a round of its 2009 series at Race City June 25-28, promoted by Tim Johnson and Kel Davidsen, longtime racers and executive members with the Calgary Motorcycle Roadracing Association.

Additionally, the CMRA has released a six-round schedule at the track for the 2009 season.

From Majik X

CALGARY, AB -- Bow Cycle, in co-operation with Canadian Kawasaki Motors has announced it will team up to support Majik X’s female racer Amy Karthaus for the 2009 season.

Karthaus will ride Kawasaki's new ZX-6R in the CMRA Amateur 600 championship along with the Middleweight classes in the Masters of the Mountain Series at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT, MRA in Colorado and selected rounds of the Armour Bodies Amateur 600 Sport Bike national series.

Karthaus burst onto the scene in 2006, competing in the CMRA's Novice Class in Calgary aboard a 2003 Kawasaki 636. She followed up the next season with a Novice win in Spokane, WA and respectable podium finishes with the Women’s Cup in Eastern Canada. Stoner tops Massa in kart event

From motogp.com

The annual Ducati-Ferrari Wrooom event drew to a close last Friday in the Northern Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio with the former MotoGP World Champion Casey Stoner emerging as the winner in an exciting ice-kart race which also involved his new teammate Nicky Hayden and Ferrari F1 star Felipe Massa.

Ducati and Ferrari traditionally host their official pre-season presentations together in the Dolomite mountains and the MotoGP riders enjoyed the week of skiing and light hearted activities, in amongst the serious business of photo shoots and press conferences as the Ducati Desmosedici GP9 was unveiled and Hayden was formally introduced to the media by the Italian factory.

However, it was his successor as MotoGP World Champion, Stoner, who won the plaudits on Friday evening in the friendly ice-kart race, holding off second placed Massa, third placed Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer and fourth placed Hayden.

Massa's Finnish teammate Kimi Raikkonen was absent due to a fever.

KYMCO Canada holds prices

From KYMCO Canada

KYMCO Canada has made a strategic decision this year to provide some financial stability to its dealers and customers during this time of economic uncertainty. As such, it has retained the majority of its 2008 prices for the 2009 model year.

Only the Vitality 50 scooter and the MXU 500 ATV experienced a slight price modification of 4.5% and 1.5% respectively (or $100). As an additional benefit, KYMCO Canada has slashed prices on genuine replacement parts by at least 15% from 2008 levels.

In these times of economic instability, retailers and consumers are forced to navigate financial challenges and to make financial decisions without any accurate predictions for the state of the economy in the near future. Many suppliers in the powersport industry have responded to a looming recession by raising their prices to offset a decreasing volume in sales and/or an increase in the cost of foreign currency. Ultimately, it is the consumer that is being asked to absorb the difference.

There are many indicators that signal positive growth for the powersport industry in 2009, particularly in the scooter category. Team KYMCO and its network of dealers have reason to be optimistic despite some of the hardships that are changing the structure of the Canadian market.

"Tough" win for Blazusiak

From Taddy Blazusiak Results Service

OSWESTRY, WALES -- Taddy Blazusiak started 2009 in style by winning the WOR Events organised The Tough One, staged in Oswestry, Wales on Saturday.

Competing in the event for the second time after having finished runner-up in ’08, Blazusiak claimed his first international victory of the new season. Finishing the two-hour extreme hare scramble comfortably ahead of his closest rival, Blazusiak was joined on the podium by WEC regular Tom Sagar and former Hell’s Gate winner Wayne Braybrook.

“The Tough One was the one extreme event missing from my resume, so I am really pleased to have won," Blazusiak said. "It’s not best suited to trials riders because it is more of a hard cross-country race, so to win it is really great. It’s a shame that David Knight and Paul Edmondson had problems, but I felt that I rode well.”

With the race getting under way with a Le Mans style start Blazusiak found himself in fifth position by the time he arrived at his bike, which meant he would spend the opening laps of the race playing catch up as Braybrook and Knight battled it out for the early lead.

Switching back to a 250cc two-stroke KTM for ’09 having campaigned a 200cc EXC during ’08, Blazusiak was quickly in his stride, and with Braybrook dropping backwards closed in and past Sagar for the lead.

Once in the lead Blazusiak remained out front until he received the chequered flag shortly before the two-hour mark.

Making it the perfect day for Blazusiak he then topped The Boulder Dash - a short sprint across a technical, unforgiving and demanding section of rocks.

Results (Courtesy David Knight Results Service)
1. Taddy Blazusiak (KTM) 1:57:07, 11 laps
2. Tom Sagar (Husaberg) 1:59:46, 11 laps
3. Wayne Braybrook (Gas Gas) 2:05:07, 11 laps
4. Dougie Lampkin (Beta) 10 laps

Coma coasts to victory

From KTM Racing

With his second Dakar win in his sights, KTM factory rider Marc Coma coasted through the final stage of the first ever Dakar in South America on Saturday to finish sixth and take victory in the race.

Coma, from Spain, dominated the race that started on Jan. 3 and finished with an impressive winning margin of one hour, 25 minutes and 38 seconds.

"I can't describe the feeling - happy doesn't even come close," Coma said. "It is so good to be able to draw a line under two difficult years - losing the 2007 Dakar two days from the end and then the cancellation of the 2008 edition.

"Winning this race is all about preparation and Jordi [Viladoms], Gerard [Farres] and I worked very hard on that this year. It has been a difficult rally for both the organizers and the competitors, due to our lack of experience in racing on this continent, but we have all risen to that challenge."

New Kawasaki tests in Australia

From motogp.com

Kawasaki has debuted the new Ninja ZX-RR in a private test at the Australian circuit of Eastern Creek.

Kawasaki factory test riders Olivier Jacque and Tamaki Serizawa are carrying out a two-day private test for the Japanese manufacturer at the former World Championship circuit.

Although Kawasaki have announced the withdrawal of their factory team from this year´s World Championship, the 2009 Ninja ZX-RR will be available for use by a private team with relevant negotiations still being undertaken.

Former MotoGP competitor Jacque and the experienced Serizawa are working with European and Japanese staff to evaluate the progress that has been made with the Ninja ZX-RR over recent months.

Jacque warmed up by re-acquainting himself with the track - where he achieved a podium in 1996 in the 250cc class - by undertaking several laps on a 2008 ZX-RR, before later trying out the updated 2009 model which differs significantly from last year´s bike. Serizawa also undertook laps on the new bike, to check on any possible teething problems.

Jacque noted after his first few laps on the new model, "I only had a quick first run but the first impression with the bike is quite positive. Overall it seems lighter and more agile, so the work done over the winter has definitely been positive. Now we have to rack up some miles to have a better idea of the bike´s potential."

The updated ZX-RR contrasts from last year´s prototype in terms of a narrower design, featuring an updated chassis, a new swingarm and a new engine for 2009. This was the first time the bike had been tested on track as conditions were previously too cold to run it at Kawasaki´s designated Japanese test venue of Autopolis.

DiSalvo and Cardenas for M4 Suzuki

From Team M4 Suzuki

Team M4 Suzuki will present a formidable line-up as the team contests the 2009 AMA Daytona Sportbike class. New Yorker Jason DiSalvo has signed a contract with Team Hammer, Inc. (racing as Team M4 Suzuki) and will join Colombian Martin Cardenas on the team's GSX-R600s this season.

Cardenas, 26 years old, has proven to be one of the fastest competitors in the American 600cc classes for the past couple of seasons on the team's machines. DiSalvo, 24, finished third in last season's Superbike points but has extensive experience on 600cc machines as well, including wins and poles in the former Supersport and Formula Xtreme classes.

"I'm super excited to be racing for the team this year," said DiSalvo. "I think the team will be a great home for me and I'm highly motivated for the season. I enjoyed the first outing when we tested last month and thought we had some good success. I'm looking forward to many more days at the tack with the team in 2009. I think we're a good combo and all of us on the team will work hard to get the good results we want. I can't wait for the first race."

"I'm excited about racing the Daytona Sportbike class for Team M4 Suzuki," said Cardenas. "I feel really good on the 600cc bikes and it looks like it's going to be interesting, so I'm hoping to do good. The team has been great for me ever since I joined them and by now everything is very familiar. We should only improve as we continue to work together."

In Cardenas and DiSalvo, the team feels it has two racers capable of winning races and challenging for podiums as it begins its 30th season of professional racing. This year, mechanics Michael Tjon and Frank Aragaki will work with DiSalvo. Robin Hawley and Mike Canfield will again work with Cardenas.

"We were happy just to have Martin coming back because it gave us great potential to win races and earn podiums. We've learned just how much of a fantastic rider he is. Now, Jason coming in doubles our potential for the kind of results we strive for," said Crew Chief Keith Perry. "Having someone of Jason's experience is gonna be great for the team. We were impressed when he tested for us and we're all aware of his successful results in the past."

U.S. drops motorcycle tariff plan

From the American Motorcyclist Association

PICKERINGTON, OH -- The U.S. trade representative has decided against imposing any tariffs on certain motorcycles imported from Europe in a trade dispute over beef, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) reports.

The AMA, its members, the Motorcycle Industry Council, individual manufacturers, dealers and others had contacted the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative opposing the idea of possibly putting a 100% import duty on certain European goods -- including motorcycles with engine displacements of 51cc to 500cc.

"This is great news not only for U.S. enthusiasts of these European motorcycles but also for the small- and medium-sized American businesses that sell and import these machines," said Ed Moreland, AMA vice president for government relations. "But we have to remain vigilant to ensure that these bikes don't slip onto the tariff list in the future."

Imposing the tariff could have increased the cost of certain imported motorcycles and scooters from manufacturers such as Aprilia, Beta, BMW, Bultaco, Fantic, Gas Gas, Husqvarna, Husaberg, KTM, Montesa, Piaggio, Scorpa, TM and Vespa.

The proposal was put together in retaliation to the 27-member European Union's continuing import ban on American beef treated with growth hormones. EU officials haven't lifted that 20-year-old ban, despite a World Trade Organization order to end it.

Christie team looking for '09 options

By John Hopkins

Roz-Gar Racing is in the process of refocusing its search for a ride for up-and-coming road racer Jodi Christie following news of the cancellation of the 2009 AMA Red Bull Rookies Cup on Thursday.

The 15-year-old Christie had secured one of the coveted spots in the program, which made its debut in 2008, and was expected to contend for the series title.

"The tryouts were held at Barber Motorsports Park near Birmingham, AL on Oct. 3-5. One week later Kevin Schwantz informed Jodi personally that he was looking forward to the year riding with Jodi and honing his skills," said team owner Gary Christie in a press release. "To say that Jodi and family were thrilled would have been an understatement.

"Having taken part in the tryouts and during contract negotiations with Red Bull US it gave us a great feel of what we had to look forward to in the upcoming series. From the moment we made contact in October to today’s press release from Red Bull we felt their professionalism and sense of family."

Jodi Christie won the 2008 Armour Bodies Amateur 600 Sport Bike title on a Yamaha YZF-R6, and the Keene, ON racer will now likely try to find a ride in the national Pro ranks for the coming season.

"Jodi and crew would like to thank Stuart Nodell and Vicki Schouten for their encouragement to sign up for the tryouts as it truly was an amazing experience," added Gary Christie in his release. "They would also like to thank Roland and Kenny Reidman for all the support. Also thanks to Mick, Geoff and the rest of the Red Bull crew and Kevin Schwantz for providing us with one of the most exciting weekends of my life."

Tradition continues at Race City

From Professional Motorsports Productions

TORONTO, Ont. – The Parts Canada Superbike Championship returns to one of its most storied venues when the third round of the national motorcycle road race series visits Race City Motorsport Park in Calgary June 25-28.

The 3.2km (2.0-mile), 11-turn track hosted its first national in 1987 and this summer’s event will be the 27th at Race City. Only Shannonville Motorsport Park in Ontario has run more Canadian Superbike rounds.

The event will be promoted by Kel Davidsen and Tim Johnson, both longtime local racers and executive members of the Calgary Motorcycle Roadracing Association.

"It is exciting to have experienced motorcycle racers and organizers like Kel and Tim looking after the Race City round," said Colin Fraser of Professional Motorsports Productions, which organizes the Parts Canada Superbike Championship. "The Alberta motorcycle community is important to us and we look forward to bringing our series back to Calgary this summer."

The 53-year-old Davidsen was an original CMRA member when the club was founded in 1987 and served as its president from 2004 to 2007. Johnson, 42, started racing with the CMRA in 1993 and was its president in 2008. Johnson also worked with PMP in its SunTrust Moto-ST Series in 2007.

"We both have experience putting on races," Davidsen said. "We are still on the CMRA executive but we also wanted to ensure that Calgary stays on the national calendar. We are both able to put in a lot of effort to make this event a success. We have many ties in the industry and good relationships with other western clubs."

Johnson and Davidsen are working on attracting sponsorship for the weekend from both inside and outside the motorcycle industry, and are also planning events beyond the racing to add to the weekend.

"We have talked to stunt show teams who are interested in coming and we’d like to bring back things like demo days to make this an exciting event for the fans," Johnson said. "We have close relationships with the existing volunteers, and we also want as many of our local club racers as possible competing at this event."

The CMRA has a history of producing top Canadian racers and Cochrane, Alta.’s Clint McBain finished second in last year’s Parts Canada Superbike Championship. It will run a six-round series at Race City this summer, opening May 23-24 and closing Sept. 19-20. More information is available at www.roadracing.org.

The June 25-28 national weekend will also include a doubleheader for the Honda CBR125R Challenge in co-operation with the Alberta Mini RoadRacing Association. One race will be held on the main Race City road course, while the second will be staged with the AMRA at the adjacent Varsity Chrysler Speed Park.

Despres moves into second

From KTM Racing

KTM's two leading factory riders, Marc Coma and Cyril Despres, both veterans and winners of previous Dakar rallies, were again in a class of their own in Stage 12 of the 2009 race on Thursday.

Coma continues his charge to overall victory with a commanding lead of one hour, 29 minutes and 48 seconds and Despres, as stage winner, dislodged Frenchman David Fretigne and is now in second place.

Despres finished just 1:23 ahead of Coma with Gerard Farres (KTM) third (at 9:47). Fretigne is now third overall just four minutes and seven seconds behind Despres.

Riders faced another weather phenomenon on Thursday when the Argentinean skies opened up to a downpour of rain which, together with accompanying wind, added another difficult dimension to the day's ride. The original course had also been shortened by about 30km to bypass recently discovered archeological treasures on the original route.

"The navigation was really difficult today," Despres said. "It was like a treasure hunt and it is always a pleasure when you find the right point. Then three or four kilometres from the end it got a little less fun with a modification to the road book that wasn't too clear and I lost some minutes. I heard Frétegné's engine at the first refuelling CP and it didn't sound too good so I guessed there was a good chance of getting the second place overall."

"There were some places where it was a little muddy, but nothing serious," Coma said. "The thing that made today difficult was the navigation - particularly at the end. I don't think the road book was wrong, just difficult to interpret. The sand was also very soft which didn't make life any easier."

Covering territory used in other rallies, the penultimate stage on Friday, from Argentina's La Rioja to Cordoba, is likely to attract a lot of local support. Riders will need their full attention to work their way through the cactus country including a physically draining 545km special.

AMA Red Bull Cup cancelled

By John Hopkins

There will be no Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup in 2009. The news came in a press release from Red Bull Thursday afternoon.

"In a time when companies around the world have been affected by the current state of the economy, the racing industry has not been immune," the release said. "Due to a significant reduction of key partner support, Red Bull has made the tough decision to trim the 2009 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup calendar to eight races at six Grands Prix and cancel the 2009 Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup season."

The news comes as a tough blow to Keene, ON's Jodi Christie, who was due to be announced as one of the riders chosen for the 2009 U.S. series and was considered by some observers as a legitimate title contender. The 15-year-old winner of last year's Armour Bodies Amateur 600 Sport Bike national title will now likely try to put together a program for the Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike class.

Emerson Connor of Burlington, ON, who finished eighth in last year's AMA Rookies Cup, was also expected to be invited back to the series.

The top riders from last year's AMA series, Americans Benny Solis and Hayden Gillim will compete in the MotoGP Rookies Cup. The schedule for that series is as follows:

May 2-3, Jerez – Spain (doubleheader)
May 30, Mugello – Italy
June 27, Assen – Netherlands
July 18, Sachsenring – Germany
July 25, Donington – England
Aug. 15-16, Brno – Czech Republic (doubleheader)

Major changes for '09 Ducati

From motogp.com

With the Desmosedici GP9 officially unveiled to the press at Ducati's annual Wrooom event in the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio this week, Ducati Corse CEO and Ducati Motor Holding Product Director Claudio Domenicali has explained the updates that have been made to the machinery ahead of the 2009 season.

The Italian boss told the media on Wednesday, "The new bike is a major change, and it is the first time for many years that we are changing our concept. The trellis frame is part of the Ducati DNA, we have done lots of tests, and there are lots more still to do, but it seems to us that it is the right way to go."

He continued, "It presents us with quite an innovative structure, with the new carbon fibre frame linking the upper part of the engine with the steering block. It's complex image-wise, as the trellis frame has been the basis of our bikes for a long time, but it also demonstrates that the best solutions can come from innovation. The old style frame is still good and will continue to be in our road bikes but we are keen to test the new system."

On the specifics of the 2009 motor itself Domenicali revealed that the work of Filippo Preziosi, General Director of Ducati Corse, is ongoing, stating, "In the engine itself we are working on new mapping settings, and we are trying to flatten out the torque curve as much as possible. We want to make the engine as driveable as possible, we have the power, but we are now focusing on a linear engine response."

The factory leader also explained that cost control also affects the current engine development philosophy, noting, "Along with the other members of the MSMA we are working on making changes, mainly for 2010, to improve the economic situation mainly for the satellite teams but also for the sport in general. It is important to have strict cost control and balance as much as possible the costs versus the revenues, and all manufacturers have to find this common goal.

"We think one way of doing this may be to make the engines last longer, to last more races. This will help reduce costs significantly. Currently we get about 600-800km out of one engine, but we hope to be able to double that."

The major news in the Ducati camp this winter has been the arrival Nicky Hayden, of whom Domenicali enthused, "We are very happy to have Nicky in our squad as we have wanted him for a long time. He is a World Champion, a real fighter and I think he will be a perfect partner to Casey. They can communicate well and he is also very fast so he will push Casey along too.

"It was hard at first in the tests for him, but on the final day in Jerez we were very happy with the results and look forward to testing once again in February. Our bike is peculiar, we know this, and we know that not all riders have always got on with it, but we know it can go fast and think Nicky is capable of doing that."

Ducati renews sponsors

From Ducati Corse Press

Riello UPS, the leading European manufacturer of uninterruptible power supplies and standby power systems has increased its support for Ducati Corse in its attempt to win the 2009 MotoGP World Championship title.

Riello UPS, part of the Riello Elettronica Group, has steadily increased its sponsorship of Ducati over the last two years from being a technical sponsor to this latest high profile level. For the new season, Riello UPS has ensured that its logo appears on the racing leathers worn by Casey Stoner and Nicky Hayden, principally on their chests and arms. As in previous seasons the logo will also be visible on the Ducati Desmosedici bikes themselves, on the front and rear fenders.

The Ducati Corse Team also benefits from the relationship technically. Riello UPS provides power protection in the form of its latest generation UPS systems. These provide secure power to the telemetry, control and communications systems used by the team, no matter what the state of the 'local mains power supply' and wherever the team is racing in the World.

Additionally Ducati and Enel have extended their partnership agreement, which began last year, until 2010.

Enel is Italy’s largest electricity company and the second-largest stock-listed utility company in Europe in terms of installed capacity.

Under the agreement, Enel’s corporate identity will be emblazoned on the Desmosedici GP bikes, leathers and helmets of the official Ducati MotoGP Team riders.

The partnership with Ducati is part of a series of sporting initiatives supported by Enel, which is already involved in swimming, tennis and basketball.

Fog foils Stage 11 of Dakar

From KTM Racing

Just as the 2009 Dakar was about to leave Peru, cross the Andes and re-enter Argentina for the 11th stage of the rally on Wednesday, organizers announced they were forced to cancel due to heavy fog forecast for the whole route.

The desert coastal areas of Chile and Peru are often subject to fog when cool air comes in from the Pacific and hits the Andes Mountains.

The cancellation came as a disappointment at a time when the rally is entering not only some of the most dramatic scenery but also at a critical stage. KTM factory rider Marc Coma still maintains a comfortable 1 hour 24 minutes and 50 seconds overall lead over the second placed Frenchman David Fretegne. Meanwhile KTM factory rider Cyril Despres finished hot on the rear wheel of Fretegne in Stage 10 and is now just three minutes behind him.

Both Coma and Despres, long time rivals and winners of Dakar Rallies in Africa are very much aware that the race is still wide open. In the last rally held in Africa in 2007, Coma looked a certain winner then crashed in the final stages and had to withdraw leaving second-placed Despres with the prize.

Stage 11, which was to take the contestants from Copiapo to Fiambala, a total of 680km with a special of 215km across the Paso San Francisco and into a sandy landscape not unlike Mauretania, had been billed as the "most majestic" stage of the rally. Organizers announced that because the timing of the stage could not be altered due to the crossing of the Andes and the border crossing between Chile and Argentina they had no alternative but to cancel. Instead participants will now proceed to the Fiambala bivouac in liaison on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday riders tackle Stage 12 from Fiambala to La Rioja, a distance of 518km of which 253km is the special. Back in Argentina and now in the closing phases of the rally, they will have to call upon all of their technical skills to attack a range of dunes, including the formidable "white dunes."

Stage win for Viladoms; Coma still leads

From KTM Racing

Victory in Stage 10 of the 2009 Dakar went to KTM factory rider Jordi Viladoms on Tuesday with factory teammate Alain Duclos coming home second. Marc Coma made it a perfect KTM day to maintain his commanding overall lead as the rally re-enters Argentina.

While Coma maintains his overall lead on the Frenchman David Fretigne (second at 1:24:50) and Cyril Despres (third at 1:31:11), the big change at the top of the leader board is that Despres now trails Fretigne by just over six minutes.

"I arrived at the first refuelling in more or less the position I expected," Viladoms said. "So I was very surprised, not to say a little concerned, to see that at the second refuelling Marc wasn't there. Much to my relief, he arrived two minutes later, with Cyril and Chaleco [Lopez]. On leaving the refuelling CP Alain and I waited for our respective riders and then all four of us rode through the camel grass together - a lot of fun.

"Then, not far from the end, we couldn't find the waypoint. We headed off up this huge dune, more like a mountain, to get to it and in the process all split up. I started to get worried again and then two dunes later I saw an orange bike in the distance and fortunately it was Marc - a big relief."

"We left the bivouac at about 6 this morning, but because of the fog and the fact that the helicopters couldn't fly, we didn't start till 10," Coma said. "Then this evening we didn't get back to 17.30 - it was a very long day - and quite a stressful one!

"Everything was going fine until we got lost after the refuelling CP and lost about 20 minutes Then nearly at the end we struggled to find a waypoint and had to ride through some pretty soft sand. If yesterday resembled Morocco today was a bit like Mauritania."

Regrettably, what promised to be a spectacular Stage 11 that was billed as the most majestic of the entire rally was cancelled on Tuesday evening due to predicted bad weather. Riders will now just go to Fiambala across the border in Argentina in liaison and restart from there the next day.

Three tests set for AMA road racing

From AMA Pro Racing

DAYTONA BEACH, FL - Three officially sanctioned AMA Pro Road Racing test days will be held in 2009 for AMA Pro American Superbike and AMA Pro Daytona SportBike competitors as a key part of new testing policies and regulations that were announced Tuesday from AMA Pro headquarters.

Each of the three official test days will be held at respective tracks in the East, West and Midwest and represent the only opportunities competitors will have to test at AMA Pro sanctioned tracks this year.

As of Feb. private testing will no longer be permitted at tracks that are hosting an AMA Pro Road Racing event this year. Thursday at-event promoter test days have also been eliminated.

The three officially sanctioned tests are tentatively scheduled, pending contract approvals, for Infineon Raceway, April 20-21, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, June 10-11 and New Jersey Motorsports Park, July 21-22.

Each test will be operated and sanctioned by AMA Pro and will offer competitors technical inspection, timing and scoring and air fence. Entrants will be responsible for track rental costs, tires and fuel.

The new testing regulations will be strictly enforced and any violators will be fined $10,000 and placed on a one-year probation commencing when the fine is paid. AMA Pro will be the sole authority regarding determination of a testing policy violation.

The new AMA Pro testing restrictions do not apply to track test days open to the general public and organized race events, such as those conducted by AFM, CCS and WERA, are not considered a violation of this policy.
